Hogg Middle School Incoming 6th Grade Summer Reading 2014

International Baccalaureate World School – MYP

Due September 19th

This summer, Hogg MS students will develop an understanding of what it means to be an IB student by exploring the ten IB Learner profile attributes and using the profiles to analyze an assigned work of fiction. Each student is expected to read the one required reading book for his/her grade level, select one book from the choice A list, and select 3 additional books to read. You may consult the lists provided for recommendations. Before returning to school each student will have read a total of 5 novels.

*Required reading book: Read the following book and complete the IB Learner Profile chart in this packet.

Mockingbird: (Mok’ing-burd) by Kathryn Erskine. Ten-year-old Caitlin, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, struggles to understand emotions, show empathy, and make friends at school, while at home she seeks closure by working on a project with her father.

*Choice A List: Select one novel to read from this list and write a one page essay explaining how the main character exhibited 3 of the IB Learner Profiles.

Maze Runner by James Dashner. “If you ain’t scared, you ain’t human.” When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his name. Boys whose memories are also gone, surround Thomas. Outside the towering stonewalls that surround their living quarters, is a limitless ever-changing maze. The maze is the only way out—and no one’s ever made it through alive but soon everything is going to change. (If you have read the Maze Runner you may read the sequels)
Phineas Gage: A Gruesome but True Story about Brain Science by John Fleischman.
This is a book for students interested in medicine or science or who want to know how a guy could survive an iron rod shooting through his brain.
The Giver by Louis Lowry. The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life Assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. (If you have read the Giver you may read one of the other books in the series.)
A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park Young Salva survives many dangers growing up in war-torn Sudan and dedicates his life to making a difference for those who live in his native land. Based on a true story.

*Free Choice: With the help of your parent or an adult, select 3 books to read that will hold your interest and will challenge you. Please look over these lists and read a few reviews before making your selection.

As you read the required novel for your grade level, analyze how different characters exhibit the IB Learner profile (provided below). You may use characters more than once as you complete the chart below.
