Students are expected to bring a binder to class each day. Students are expected to organize their notes, handouts, etc. in a 1 ½ inch 3 ring binder, which should be divided into 6 sections with tabbed dividers and labeled in the following manner:

1. General Handouts and Information

2. Daily Warm-Ups

3. SPRITE Assessments

4. Cornell Notes

5. Reference Materials (maps, timelines, etc.)

6. Test Assessments

Attendance and Tardy Policy

Good attendance is critical to being successful in this class. There are many benefits to coming to class which include having the opportunity to ask questions, make corrections to work, interact within groups, etc. Moreover, many students find it difficult to make up work after an absence while simultaneously attempting to keep up with current assignments

Students who arrive late to class must enter the room with a pass, or they will be considered tardy. Students are issued one free tardy coupon per card marking. After the tardy coupon has been used, students must come to class on time or they will be subject to the provisions of the school tardy policy as well as a mandatory writing assignment.

If a student arrives tardy to class after work has been collected, it will be considered late and not accepted without a late homework coupon. If a student arrives late to class with a pass, it is the student’s responsibility to find out if anything was collected. All work must be handed in by the end of the hour, or it will also be considered late.

Daily Procedures

As students walk through the door, they should check the white board at the front of the classroom for instructions and follow them. Assignments are NOT always collected directly by the teacher. Students are expected to turn in their assignments to the colored drawer designated for their hour that is labeled “IN.” It is the student’s responsibility to check the whiteboard for reminders and to turn in his or her work to the “IN” drawer without a verbal reminder. When the assignments have been graded and recorded, they will be placed in the designated “OUT” drawer. Once again, it is the student’s responsibility to pick-up and save graded assignments from the “OUT” drawer and organize them accordingly in their binder.

Website

Students are expected to check the class website, edublogs.misd.net/fisher, on a daily basis. This is your official homework assignment every day! The website is updated every 24-48 hours with reminders about upcoming assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, essays, etc. In addition, this website allows students to download the majority of assignments directly from the comfort of home. This is a resource Mrs. Fisher provides because she wants you to be successful! NOTE: This is not connected to Parent Portal. You do NOT need a password to access this site.

In order to access descriptions of assignments for your class, type in the website address, and look at the right hand side of the page. You will see a column labeled Categories. Click on World History.

In order to access actual copies of handouts, worksheets, etc., click on World History Handouts, then click on the title of the post where it reads CLICK HERE, and finally click on the title of the assignment you want to open.

Make-Up Assignments

Students who are absent or late for class for any reason should check the class website edublogs.misd.net/fisher to find out what work they missed. If students do not have access to the Internet at home, it is my expectation that they ask me for a library pass to access the website on the school’s computers before or after school, between classes, or during lunch. Students have two days for every one day they were absent to make-up work. For example, if a student is absent on a Monday, make-up work is due Wednesday. After this point, it will be considered late and not accepted without a late homework coupon. If you are absent for any extended period for any reason, it is your responsibility to schedule a meeting with Mrs. Fisher within twenty-four hours of your return to class to discuss due dates for make-up work. NOTE: Absences entitle you to extra time to make up work—not unlimited time.

Missing/Late/Failed Assignments

All students will receive two late homework coupons per card marking to submit a maximum of two late assignments. In addition, students will receive two second chance coupons per card marking to re-submit a maximum of two previously completed, but failed assignments for which they wish to earn back additional points. NOTE: Coupons cannot be used for projects and writing assignments. Coupons are non-transferable. Coupons should be saved for emergency situations.

Two weeks prior to the end of the card marking, missing or late assignments will not be accepted under any circumstances. Occasionally, classes may earn the privilege of attending Amnesty Day. This is a voluntary event held after school a maximum of once per quarter which allows students to make up missing work for partial credit.

NOTE: This is a privilege, not a right. Not all classes earn this privilege. Furthermore, this event is not designed to allow students to make up every single missing assignment.

Quizzes and Tests

Students who earn a 69% or lower on quizzes or tests may earn the privilege of re-testing for a maximum of a70% based on three conditions:

1. You must come on the designated re-take day. NOTE: quiz and test re-takes are only given after school.

2. You must make corrections to your original quiz or test in red pen.

3. You must get a parent/guardian signature on your quiz or test.

Students should bear in mind that re-takes are given at the teacher’s discretion and may not be offered for every quiz or test. If Mrs. Fisher feels a student is abusing this privilege, the privilege will be revoked.

If students are absent the day prior to a quiz or test, they are still expected to take the quiz or test on the same day as the rest of the class. Students who are absent on quiz or test days will automatically take an essay version of the quiz or test. Students who are absent on quiz or test days have twenty-four hours from the day of their return to class to schedule a make-up, or it will become a zero in the grade book. However, students are allotted one make-up quiz coupon which can be used to make-up a quiz or test during the school day.

Passes

Students are allotted one hall coupon per card marking ONLY, which can be used for trips to the locker, restroom, etc. This must be used in conjunction with an agenda. Students are expected to use good manners and judgment when they ask to leave the room.

Cheating and Plagiarism

There is simply NO excuse for cheating. Students who are caught cheating will receive a zero for the assignment, period. If it is a major assignment worth of large number of points, students risk failing the card marking. Other possible consequences include, but are not limited to, administrative action, a phone call home, after-school detention, or additional classwork. Plagiarism is a form of cheating, and likewise, will not be tolerated. All work must be cited. All work should be each student’s original thoughts, words, and ideas—whether the student is working individually, with a partner, or in a group.

Cell Phone Policy

Each semester Mrs. Fisher’s classroom starts in the yellow zone. Cell phones will be utilized at various times in class to promote essential academic and life skills. The following policy is necessary to maximize the benefits of cell phone use while minimizing its capacity to disrupt learning. Students are expected to place their cell phones or other electronic devices on their desk face down at the beginning of every hour. If you claim not to have a phone and you are caught using it, it will be confiscated. If you claim not to have a phone and it disrupts class by ringing, vibrating, etc., it will be confiscated. NOTE: Mrs. Fisher reserves the right at any time make her classroom a red zone.

Grading

Mrs. Fisher often initials student work to indicate that it was completed on time. Initials do NOT equal a grade. After the work has been initialed, students must still submit the assignment for it to be graded and logged in to Power School. Grades for each quarter are weighted according to the following categories:

1. Daily Warm-Ups 10%

2. Quizzes 20%

3. Notes 20%

4. Tests and Projects 40%

5. Participation 10%
