Welcome to Essential Business Law:

I have been a trial attorney for 25 years and have taught Essential Business Law each semester since fall 2006.Class time is dedicated to advising you and your business on how to protect yourself and avoid liability and litigation. We will explore wrongful termination,sexual-harassment and other employment issues, civil rights, unfair practices, defamation, fraud, discrimination, contracts, premises liability, negligence andinsurance.

We meet in my conference room for a PowerPoint presentation. The syllabus continues as follows:

1.Textbook: The Legal, Ethical & International Environment of Business, Sixth Edition, Bohlman, Dundas. You do not need the textbook for our class sessions. I do not lecture from the textbook. It will give you a good overview of business law.

2.Quizzes:The seven quizzes will be passed out at the first class meeting. You can turn in the quizzes on the last class meeting or as they are completed. Your quiz answers should be approximately 2 pages max (each quiz), single-spaced. Quiz answers can also be e-mailed to me.

3.Class Sessions:Because of the lengthy textbook and giving consideration that this is a two credit class, we meet on five occasions (generally every other week) at 6:00 PM at my officerather than every week (dates to be announced).

We will have one or more guest speakers which include prominent trial attorneys.

4.Final Examination: We will have the final exam on our last meeting. The final examination is a five (5) minute oral presentation (PowerPoint optional) on an area of business law of your choosing. It can be civil or criminal law. It can be an area we covered, from the textbook, or a new area. If the topic is one we covered or out of the textbook, it should include new material and more detail. The presentation should be designed to educate the class on your chosen topic. Please confirm with your classmates to ensure that we do not duplicate topics.

Grading: Grading will be weighted equally between the quizzes, attendance and the final examination.

Note: Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions at all regarding the course or otherwise.
