About Tommy’s

Tommy’s was started in 1992 by two Obstetricians who wanted to make pregnancy and childbirth safer for all. We don’t know enough about why pregnancies go wrong and so it is not surprising that:

  • 1 in 4 women will have a miscarriage
  • 1 in 200 babies will be stillborn
  • 100 babies everyday are born too soon

Each baby lost represents a tragedy for the family concerned. It touches the lives of almost every household in the UK. We are also concerned about the lifelong implications suffered by many children who are born too soon or too small.

Tommy’s exists to change all this. We fund medical research and provide information on the causes and prevention of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth.

Tommy’s funds three centres of maternal and fetal health, one in London at St Thomas’ Hospital, one in Manchester at St Mary’s Hospital and the newly opened centre in Edinburgh atthe Royal Infirmary. In addition Tommy’s funds research grants in hospitals around the UK.

Tommy’s believes that every parent should have the opportunity to maximise their chances of having a healthy pregnancy. Tommy’s provides information to parents-to-be about how to minimise the risk factors.

The charity employs around 25 employees and we currently raise c £4m a year.

Our Patron is the Duchess of York and our Trustees cover a wide variety of interests from medicine to banking to media and even sport.

We are a go-ahead charity with a cause which deeply touches many people. We still find time to enjoy what we do!

Departmental description

The Community Events Assistant will be based within Tommy’s Community Fundraising Department. The role will involve helping to deliver the Tommy’s calendar of events.

We have a number of large-scale bespoke events that this role would be involved with. These include a Singathon, Sensathon and Danceathon. Each event is partnered with a large organisation and we work hard to ensure that each event is a success for us and them.

We are also involved in a number of cycling and running events such as Prudential RideLondon 100, Nightrider, Virgin Money London Marathon, BUPA Great North Run, Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon and the Brighton Marathon. We have some very large teams in several of these events and we focus on filling those teams and delivering a first-class standard of event to each person taking part.

We also hold the “Tommy’s awards”. Now in its 20th year, the Tommy’s Awards recognise heroes of families who’ve have been touched by pregnancy complications, or the loss of a baby. The awards bring in around £100k in sponsorship money from corporate partners who pay to brand a specific award.
