Artist Residency opportunity in K11 art village, Wuhan, supported by Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA) and Manchester City Council

Introduction

Manchester City Council and CFCCA are pleased to announce an open call opportunity for local, Manchester based contemporary artists to apply for a 10-14 day funded artist residency at the K11 art village in Wuhan, China.

Wuhan has a population of around 11 million people and is the capital of Hubei Province in Central China. Manchester and Wuhan have a sister city relationship which dates back to 1986, and during 2016 the two cities are celebrating the 30th anniversary of this partnership. The residency at K11 will form part of activities to mark this anniversary in Wuhan in early November.

A delegation of Manchester based Councillors, business, education and cultural leaders will be visiting Wuhan in the beginning of November 2016 and CFCCA has partnered with Manchester City Council to provide a funded artist residency opportunity for one local artist to strengthen ties with the ‘sister’ city, by working within and starting dialogues with artists and organisations there.

The residency will be between 10-14 days (depending on availability of the recipient artist) and should take place between the end of October and beginning of November 2016. The selected artist will have access to a studio/living space in the K11 art village and in partnership with K11 will work within the studio and also locally with the local community to create new work. The results will be showcased in an open studio event to the visiting Manchester and Wuhan delegation including representatives of the WuhanForeign Affairs Office and the Lord Mayor of Manchester.

CFCCA will also host an open event within the gallery after the residency has taken place, to showcase the work and connections made whilst in residence. Details of this event will be discussed with the selected artist prior to departure and will likely happen in January 2017.

The artist will receive return flights from Manchester to Wuhan, materials expenses, a daily per diem for living expenses, access to a studio with inbuilt living accommodation, support from K11 staff and volunteers, support from K11 to host a workshop and event with local residents and artists, support from K11 and CFCCA to host an event/open studio for the Manchester/Wuhan delegation, and support from CFCCA to host a showcase event in Manchester after the residency is complete.

Proposal Brief

CFCCA would like to invite Manchester based contemporary artists to submit proposals to be considered for this exciting, one-off residency opportunity.

We would especially like to encourage applications from artists with experience in delivering community based projects and workshops who would be interested in hosting a workshop whilst on residency in Wuhan.

Please submit;

- a short project proposal on why the residency would be beneficial to your practice and what you will work on whilst in residence (300-500 words)

- an artist CV, including a short artist statement (maximum 2 sides of A4)

- examples of previous work (up to 6 images), and links to any websites or blogs

- a statement of your availability between 21 October and 5 November 2016

K11 art village, Wuhan

The K11 art village is a two-story tall building located in Changqing Garden Community, Wuhan, which was inaugurated in 2011. Encompassing 11 studios dedicated to the Artist-in-Residence programme, a 1000 square-metre art exhibition hall and a 300-square-metre multi-functional space, the innovative platform seeks to nurture emerging art practitioners.

A pillar of the K11 Art Foundation (KAF) is the annual programme of the K11 art village, which seeks to nurture young artists and enrich the practices of emerging voices in China, fostering research for artistic creation. An important platform of KAF is the Artist-in-Residence Programme, where participating artists are encouraged to enhance and impact the local environment and communities bordering the K11 art village, with KAF presenting artist workshops, exhibitions and creative happenings.

As a whole the thoughtful initiatives offer the greater public a diverse range of programmes to cultivate audience appreciation of art and culture in Greater China.
