Science Safety Letter to Guardians

8/21/14

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Your child is enrolled in a laboratory science course this year. Safety is a priority in all of our classrooms and it is important that your child knows how to be safe in a science laboratory. With the cooperation of the instructors, parents/guardians, and students, a safety instruction program can eliminate, prevent, and correct potential hazards to maintain a safe learning environment. In order to ensure the safety of all students and the laboratory equipment they use, your child will be required to:

1. Participate in a Sciencesafety training provided during science class

2. Pass a Sciencesafety test upon completion of this training

3. Return a Science safety contract to the school with both the student’s and

parent’s/guardian’s signature

All three items must be completed before your child can safely participate in laboratory activities. These activities are critical to developing a realistic and meaningful understanding of science. In the event that your child does not pass the safety test, he or she will be given the opportunity to retake the test until they pass.If your child does not pass the test by the third try, a guardian/student/teacher conference may be necessary. This will help ensure that your child does not fall behind in class or miss critical laboratory learning.

You will find a copy of the ScienceSafety Contract enclosed. It is important that you are aware of the safety instructions your child will receive before engaging in any laboratory work. Please read the list of safety rules above. No student will be permitted to perform laboratory activities unless this contract is signed by both the student and parent/guardian and is on file with the teacher. Your signature on this contract will indicate that you have read this Student Safety Contract, are aware of the measures taken to ensure the safety of your child in the science laboratory, and will instruct your child to uphold his/her agreement to follow these rules and procedures in the laboratory.

Please review the ScienceSafety Contract with your child and return it to his/her science teacher by ______. If you have any questions about the information contained in the ScienceSafety Contract or about SFUSD Science Laboratory Safety, please do not hesitate to email me at .

Sincerely,

Mrs. Anderson
