Position Objective
The Mirror Families methodology has been evidenced to be an effective method for vulnerable families, including those with substance misuse issues, to build ongoing and sustainable relationships. The Mirror Families Project Officer is responsible for the introduction and integration of Mirror Families Practice. The position is responsible for promoting the Mirror Families approach as a best practice framework in the Victorian child and family service system. The key purpose of the position is to effect systemic practice change within this system for the long term.
Role Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities for this position include:
- Develop a ‘Train the Trainer’ resource that supports the model so that those trained can take the model to their organisations and ensure sustainability
- Produce marketing materials and promote the benefits of the program to the child and family services sector
- Recruit participants for the training program
- Respond to growing requests for training, identify dates and locations to deliver
- Roll out training sessions
- Evaluate training for quality assurance and improvement
- Support those trained to provide training within their organisations
- Provide of ongoing supervision, monitoring and continuing professional development to trainees
- Provide secondary consultation
- Supervise trained participants to ensure training is integrated into practice both organisationally and on an individual practitioner level
- Collect de-identified pre and post client data
- Conduct formal evaluation after 12 months and at the conclusion of the funding period
- Provide a final report (after 12 months & 2 years)
- Liaise with Griffith University regarding evaluation
- Present findings in peer reviewed journals, conferences, to government and other funding bodies and partners
Key Selection Criteria
- Relevant experience in community development/or child and family welfare and/or out of home care, including an understanding of issues related to working with vulnerable families, children and volunteer carers.
- Certificate IV Alcohol & Other Drugs, or willingness to complete within 24 months.

- Capacity to learn from and with others.
- Capacity to conduct sessions which encourage the development of new practice.
- Group management and facilitation skills.
- Well-developed communication skills, both written and oral.
- Good time management and problem solving skills.
Essential Requirements
- Satisfactory outcome of a confidential Police Check and Working with Children Check. OHV is committed to child safety and is a child safe organisation.
- Empathy for those whose lives have been affected by problematic alcohol and other drug use/ and or mental health disorders.
- Possession of a current Victorian Driver’s License.
- Information technology skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Eligibility to work in Australia.
Desirable Requirements
- Relevant Health, Social or Welfare related qualification and experience
- Specialist knowledge in relevant areas such as Family Therapy, Mental Health, Family Violence, Trauma, etc.
- First Aid Certificate.
- Current knowledge of OH&S practices.

AOD Competencies
OHV requires people in clinical positions to have the following competencies (or their equivalent). Where people do not already have these competencies OHV will invest in the person’s professional development by providing them through its RTO. The timeframe for completion of the minimum competencies is to be agreed between the manager and employee.
The competencies required are:
- CHCAOD001 - Work in an alcohol and other drugs context
- CHCAOD002 - Work with intoxicated clients
- CHCAOD004 - Assess needs of clients with alcohol and other drugs issues
- CHCAOD006 - Provide interventions for people with alcohol and other drugs issues
- CHCAOD007 - Develop strategies for AOD relapse prevention
- CHCAOD009 - Develop and review individual alcohol and other drugs treatment plans
