MSC APPLIED STATISTICS
STUDENT STAFF EXCHANGE MEETING 8TH NOVEMBER 2016-
Year 1 rep: Miles Hinchliffe
Year 2 rep: Tanya Reeves
Chair: Dr Anthony Brooms
Minutes: Beverley Downton
1. ACB: Royal Statistical Society accreditation. The RSS are introducing a new process for accreditation, similar to a QAA audit. The RSS will be invited to come and inspect us, talking to both students and staff. We may be able to be reaccredited this year as we are already registered with them. ACB will provide an update in the next 2-3 months.
2. Panopto: Students have found the video quality to be poor, both in terms of lighting and visuals.
ACB: This issue has been raised at both School and College level and we will let students know the outcome. It appears that the system was installed during the summer and only tested just before the start of term.
3. When will students know about the exam timetable?
ACB: Exams are usually held in the last 2 weeks in May and the first 2 weeks in June, further details are usually available in March.
4. The issue with the video in Moodle has now been fixed.
5. ACB: There are now 2 programmes: MSc Applied Statistics; and MSc Applied Statistics and Financial Modelling. Under the Applied Statistics route there is the possibility of a Medical Applications pathway and an Operational Research pathway. These will not be openly advertised. At the beginning of the second year we will advise which modules are running and which pathways are available.
There is the possibility of an MSc Applied Statistics and Big Data Analytics programme, possibly by October 2017 but more likely October 2018. This programme would mean running a Data Mining module, which in turn would mean dropping an existing module.
The plans are to withdraw Further Statistical Analysis with the Bayesian section of FSA subsumed by an entire 15 credit module on Bayesian Methods and Multivariate Analysis section subsumed by a 15 credit Statistical Data Mining/ Machine Learning module.
6. Students have requested exercises on ACB’s modules. He will look into this.
