HOW TO CHANGE SPARK PLUGS ON 5TH GENERATION
I waited till 66000 miles to change the plugs. I can definitely feel a difference in the way the car drives.
There are a few different brands of spark plugs in the market, but save your self the $ and the hassle and stick with the NGK’s. I just purchased the NGK from Dave.B @ TOWN NORTH NISSAN, for $8.80 a piece. You can get the standard, cold or hot type NGK spark plugs. I just got the standard ones.
TOOLS NEEDED:
6 NGK plugs
4mm Allen wrench, or a driver with 4mm Allen extension
5/8 spark plug socket
10" socket extension
10" socket
Universal joint, I used a small and a big one
Torque wrench
Anti seize
A magnetic rod
INSTRUCTIONS
1.Use the 4mm Allen wrench to take off the cover. There are 4 screws to take off.
2.Using a 10" socket remove the three bolts.
3.Gently pull and shake at the same time, to get off the ignition coils. You will be able to see the spark plug sitting in there. Use the extension with the spark plug socket, and universal joint to unscrew and pull out the spark plug. Do the same with all three plugs. The new plugs are pre-gapped. But check to make sure they are 0.44. Use the torque wrench and tighten them to 14-22 lbs.
4.Now the easy part is done. The rear plugs are pretty hard to get to, especially #5. I will recommend that you stretch your back and thighs; otherwise you might pull a muscle . Careful not to scratch the FSTB. You can take it off, I didn’t cause it doesn’t really interfere with the plug change. You will need the magnetic rod to get out the spark plugs, once they are loosened.
5.Replace #4, 5, and 6. Tighten all the bolts holding in place the ignition coils. Put the tacks, wires and cable back in place. Put the cover back on the front 3 coils. Take off all the tools from the engine. Start the car. Enjoy the ride.
