Dear Sir or Madam:

We are planning our 6thAnnualDrive for a Cure, a local golf tournament to raise funds for diabetes research. Lee Iacocca launched JoinLeeNowin 2004 to fund a human clinical trial of a potential cure for type 1 diabetes. In work sponsored by the Iacocca Foundation,Dr. Denise Faustman of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard reversed and cured diabetes in mice with full blown or end-stage diabetes, the closest thing to curing it in human diabetics.

JoinLeeNowwas the grassroots campaign the foundation launched to secure the $10 millionneeded to translate these mice experiments to Phase I human clinical trials. With the help and hard work of several grassroots teams like ours, the Iacocca Foundation successfully raised $10 million to help translate this research to humans. Of the $10 million raised, $1 million was personally donated by Mr. Iacocca.

With the receipt of these funds, Dr. Faustman, along with Dr. David Nathan, began Phase I human trials in January 2008, which the lab just announced were completed with positive results submitted to the FDA. They plan to publish details in 2010. Upon reaching this important milestone, the Iacocca family decided to close its public charity and return to being the family foundation it has been for over 25 years. Now, $25 million is needed for Phase II.

From the beginning, our Marylandteam focused on raising funds to bring Dr. Faustman’s work from the lab to human trials. JoinLeeNowhas been the means by which we did that for four years. Going forward, our team will be known as Stop Autoimmunity Forever (SAF). Though our name has changed, our mission remains the same – to see Dr. Faustman’s work through, as we see it as our best hope for a real, and permanent, cure.

As we did when we were part ofJoinLeeNow, the SAF team continues to proudlyteam with The Brave Dave Open, a local charity that has raised funds for MS and other autoimmune diseases, for the last eleven years. We would like to ask your company to sponsor our event, the 6thAnnualDrive for a Cure, on Monday, September 13, 2010, at the Compass Pointe Golf Course in Pasadena, Maryland. The sponsorship levels are outlined in the enclosed brochure, and we are very open to other “creative” sponsorship ideas as well. All sponsors will be recognized at the event.

When my daughter was 20 months old, she was hospitalized due to the onset of juvenile (Type I) diabetes. Rachel is now 8 years old, and she faces a lifetime of daily insulin injections and/or use of an insulin pump, finger sticks to monitor blood sugar, strict diet regulation and possible serious complications, such as blindness, kidney failure, heart disease and amputation. Although insulin keeps her alive, it is not a cure; it is only life support. This is why we have decided to lend our full support to raise funding for Phase II of Dr. Faustman’s research in Type 1 diabetes.

Your tax-deductible contribution, no matter how big or small, will help us a great deal. The Brave Dave Open is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. To support our golf tournament, please make checks payable to the Brave Dave Open and mail with the completed registration to the address on the brochure. All net proceeds from this event will go directly to Dr. Faustman’s research team at Massachusetts GeneralHospital via the Cure Diabetes Now Fund to support these historic human clinical trials. For details, please visit the lab’s website at
