Pre-writing due Thursday, January 31

Game due Friday, February 8

YOUR JOB: Make a game or puzzle that shows facts from your nonfiction book.

___15Contains at least 25specific, accurate facts from the book. The facts represent the entire book, not just the first few pages or chapters.

___2The game or puzzle has a title. The title of the book is also somewhere on the game or puzzle (if not the title).

___2Clear directions for how to play the game or complete the puzzle are given.

___4Few to no spelling or capitalization mistakes (double check the book for correct spellings!). The writing is easy to understand and is in the game-creator’s voice (not copied exactly from the book).

___3All materials are neatly presented and easy to read, and work properly. The game clearly relates to the topic of the book.

___4Game/puzzledemonstrates creativity. The materials are original (more than filling in a template online).***See explanation below

***In order to receive an A on this project, you must create your own game or puzzle, meaning thatyou create the materials; it is not created simply by using an online template to create a Jeopardy game or crossword puzzle. Creating your own game materialsbased on an actual gamebut not using a template is eligible for an A.

If you do notwant to create your own game materials (meaning that the highest that you can earn is a B+), you can use these templates:

Crossword Puzzles:

Type your answers and clues in Word first by writing the answer, hitting the space bar once, and typing the clue, and hitting enter. Save this in case you have problems with the web site.

Go to the web site listed above. Click on “Criss-Cross.” Follow the directions. You may need to make the height and width bigger and the size of the squares smaller to fit all of your clues. (Make sure it doesn’t cut any out!) Printing in landscape may also be necessary. Print preview to make sure everything shows up correctly! Please note: Word Searches are NOT acceptable for this project. You must have clues and answers.

Jeopardy PowerPoint:

Use the template on my website, or Google “Jeopardy PowerPoint Template.” Save the file on your computer (“save as”) before you start adding information to it. Remember that you need to include the answers to the questions.Cached

Prewriting for Game/Puzzle – 15 points

  • Take notes on interesting and/or important facts from your book as you read so that you have all of the facts to make your game. You need at least 25 facts.
  • You must paraphrase your notes (say the author’s idea in your words). Do not paraphrase technical, scientific or historical words or names, though.Copy spellings of these important words or names correctly!
  • Include the page number in case you need to check on the fact when you are making your game.
  • Remember that your game must include facts from throughout the book, not just the beginning. If you divide 25 by the number of chapters or sections in your book, you will know the minimum number of facts you should have from each chapter/section.
  • You will need to attach another piece of loose leafto this to fit all of your facts.
