APUSH
The following optional assignment allows you to practice your historical interpretation skills and earn some extra credit. It is worth up to 10 points. Choose one of the links below.
1. You can choose an article, podcast, documentary, or movie that is already listed, or you can choose your own. If you choose your own, run it by me first. Bonus points if you find something amazing I haven’t seen yet.
2. Your assignment must be typed, double spaced, no crazy fonts. It must have parts A, B, and C.
Part A – Citation
A correct MLA citation at the top of your response. This section is not worth points, but your response will not be graded if your citation is incorrect. Use this cite to help you cite the article/documentary/podcasts https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ Again, this must be done absolutely correctly for me to even read your paper, no exceptions.
Part B – Summary (5 points)
A one paragraph response summarizing the article/documentary/etc. (You can go up to two paragraphs if it’s a particularly long piece.) Be sure you pay particular attention to explaining the author’s overall argument and how they prove it. (Think: what are the parts of their argument? What kind of history is it? What kind of historical evidence are they using? You will have to be more specific than just ‘primary sources’ – letters? Diaries? Speeches? Interviews? Are the people accurately representative of the time period/topic, or is the historian talking to the wrong people?) You are not evaluating the argument in this paragraph, just summarizing—so be careful not to judge in this paragraph.
Part C – Response (5 points)
Respond to the article/documentary/etc. in two or more paragraphs. Your overall task is to evaluate the scholar’s argument for accuracy, clarity, and significance. Did they do a good job proving their argument? Is it an important perspective? Do you agree with it? What did they overlook? Your opinions are entirely your own, but they must be supported by strong analysis. Choose one of the three options to guide your response:
Option 1: Historical Thinking Skills
Pay particular attention to the HTS the scholar uses in their analysis. Are they using the correct skills for their argument? If making comparisons, for example, is there something they’re forgetting? Do they include enough information for proper contextualization? Is their synthesis strong and insightful?
Option 2: PIGSAC
What rhetorical strategies does the author use to advance their argument, and were they successful? Remember, in a rhetorical analysis your evaluation focuses more on the author’s writing and how they construct their argument; this is not a general response to the overall topic. (PIGSAC = persona, intention, genre, subject, audience, context)
Option 3: Teaching History
Good history tells a story. How effective is this article/podcast/documentary at telling its story? How does the author maintain your interest (or not) throughout the piece? What techniques should a good historian use (or avoid) when teaching others about their topic? How successful is this piece at getting its audience more interested in the field of history?
