Christ Hath Appeared Unto Us
Let the people offer prayer upon entering their pews, kneeling or bowing down.
In the Lord’s Name we greet you, praying that the Holy Spirit would bless your hearing of God’s Word with a lively trust in Him who died and rose for you, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Use the time prior to the service for silent preparation for worship.
Visitors, consider prayerfully Trinity’s Confession of the Lord’s Supper on the pink bulletin insert.
See front inside cover of LSB for prayers before and after the service, and before and after receiving the Sacrament.
For self-examination before the service, consider the Christian Questions, pages 329, 330 in LSB.
Prepare for the Liturgy by marking the pages and the hymns, reviewing the order of Service, and praying the Collect for the Day.
Please leave a record of your visit either in our guest book near the main door or on the guest side of the pink slip in your service folder.
Service Notes
Even the waters serve God, for He has set the Lord Jesus over all things. They are His instrument, drowning the enemy – Pharaoh in the sea (Exodus 15:1-13) and our sinful man in Holy Baptism. They cause no fear in Jesus, for He knows that the Father will preserve Him (Matthew 14:22-33); our Lord’s faithfulness has become the source of our salvation. And therefore we know in Christ that nothing—whatever storm might arise—can separate us from the love that God has for us. We pray, then, that He would open our eyes to see our hope and inheritance, and to know His power at work in our lives (Ephesians 1:15-23).
Green, denoting growth in Christ, is the color for the season of Epiphany.
Language of the Faith
False belief. When a Christian looks away from God’s promises in Christ to someone or something else for help, comfort, and joy in life; or when a Christian fears someone else or something else instead of God.

Service of the Word
Introit, Psalm 34
The Lord saves those who call upon Him.
I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. I sought the Lord, and He answered me and delivered me fromall my fears. Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!

Salutation Collect for the Daypage 189
We pray that God, as He protects us, would enable us to fulfill our vocations.
Almighty and most merciful God, preserve us from all harm and danger that we, being ready in both body and soul, may cheerfully accomplish what You want done; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Old Testament Reading, Exodus 15:1-13
In a psalm the people of God rejoice in His mighty victory gained through the waters and His Word of promise.
1Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying, “I will sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously; the horse and His rider He has thrown into the sea. 2The Lord is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God, and I will exalt Him. 3The Lord is a man of war; the Lord is His name.
4”Pharaoh’s chariots and his host He cast into the sea, and his chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea. 5The floods covered them; they went down into the depths like a stone.
6Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, Your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy. 7In the greatness of Your majesty You overthrow Your adversaries; You send out Your fury; it consumes them like stubble. 8At the blast of Your nostrils the waters piled up; the floods stood up in a heap; the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea.
9The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them. I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.” 10You blew with Your wind; the sea covered them; they sank like lead in the mighty waters.
11“Who is like You, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? 12You stretched out Your right hand; the earth swallowed them. 13You have led in Your steadfast love the people whom You have redeemed; You have guided them by Your strength to Your holy abode.”
Gradual, Psalm 34
Fear the Lord, for He is faithful to His promise.
Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints, for those who fear Him have no lack! Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
Epistle, Ephesians 1:15-23
We pray for an increase of knowledge of God, of our rich inheritance, and of His power in Christ’s reign, working on the Church’s behalf.
15For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, 16I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might 20that He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22And He put all things under His feet and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
Alleluia Verse, Matthew 14page 190
Because of this word we shall not fear.
Immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
Holy Gospel, Matthew 14:22-33
Though tempted in many ways, Jesus remained faithful as the Son of God, and therefore secured our salvation.
22Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds. 23And after He had dismissed the crowds, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray.
When evening came, He was there alone, 24but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea.
26But when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
28And Peter answered Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”29He said, “Come.”
So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31Jesus immediately reached out His hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
32And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33And those in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” (ESV)

The Proper Preface for Epiphany
The Church praises the Father who reveals His glory in His Son, who bestows forgiveness in His body and blood.
For what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory.

God’s Stewards. Our first observation about 1 Timothy 6 is that the purpose of stewardship is always intimately related to the proper proclamation of the Word (vv.3-5) A program of stewardship, regardless of how efficient it might be, is, in the final analysis, of no real value unless it is prepared for and carried out by a faithful preaching of Jesus Christ crucified and risen.
Missions – the Lutheran Church in Poland. The Lutheran church body with whom LCMS World Mission works closely in Poland is the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession (ECAC). The ECAC has its own training center, called the Center for Mission and Evangelism in Dziegielow, near the Czech border.
