- “The Weary Blues” by Langston Hughes (p. 410)

- A brief biography of the author(s) (probably in the introduction)
- A line-by-line (or stanza by stanza) breakdown of the poem, which includes analysis of the poem at surface level, deeper level, and application level (see the “Poetry Analysis and Explication” sheeton Miss Hanson’s rubric)
- A thesis statement
- An introduction, a body, and a conclusion
Your explication should not:
- Include first-person or second-person pronouns (unless you are quoting a line)
- Have grammatical or mechanical errors
- Be researched. You are writing YOUR analysis of the poem. Remember that if Miss Hanson can upload a document to turnitin.com at any time. If I think you’ve researched your poem, I’m going to check it against other sources. The only part of your explication that you can research is a brief biography of the author(s).
