Welcome to Biology 11! The following course outline explains how the class will be structured, my personal expectations of you as Biology 11 students, and the marking scheme that you will be graded on this year. Please take time to read this over with your parents so that you know what you need to do in order to be successful!! I look forward to working with you in Biology 11 this Year! 

  • Microscope Work

Adaptation and Evolution

  • Basic Structure of DNA, Replication, Protein Synthesis, Mutation
  • Role of DNA in evolution
  • Agents, patterns and tempo of evolutionary change
  • Taxonomy

Microbiology

  • Viruses, Bacteria
  • Structure, reproduction, roles and effects

Animal Biology

  • Trends of increasing complexity in animal life forms
  • Characteristics of the following phyla, life functions:
  • Porifera, Cnidaria, Platyheminthes, Nematoda, Annelida
  • Mollusca, Echinodermata
  • Arthropoda, Chordata: Subphylum Vertebrata

Plant Biology

  • Characteristics of algae, moss, ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms
  • Trends of increasing complexity in plant life forms
  • Adaptations of plants to a land environment

Ecology

  • Interdependent roles of organisms in ecosystems

D.Expectations

  1. Treat yourself and others with kindness, dignity and respect
  2. Be in your seat and ready to begin when the bell rings (listening to the announcements if they are on)
  3. Be an active participant in class activities
  4. Never leave the classroom without the teacher’s permission
  5. Leave all food and drinks outside of the classroom
  6. No cell phones or music playing devices (if I see it, it will be removed from you for the duration of the class)

E.Lates and Missed Class

  • You are expected to arrive on time to class. If you come in late, please come in quietly and find the missed work from another student/me at the appropriate time.
  • If you miss a class, it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed. If you wish to make up a missed quiz or test you must provide a note from a parent excusing your absence and prepare to write on the next “test club” date before or after school

F.Cheating/Plagiarizing

  • Copied or plagiarized work, projects, assignments, quizzes, tests, etc. will result in a mark of ZERO for all individuals involved. There is zero tolerance for cheating.

G.Equipment and Supplies

The following should be brought to class every day:

  • Ruler

H.Final Word: I am looking forward to exploring the wonderful world of Biology with you! This is a demanding course which, at times, you will find challenging. However, with hard work and commitment you will be successful. If you are finding the material difficult please do not hesitate to find me and ask for help
