July News
Dear Club Member,
A meeting or two ago I mentioned
that I would be taking pictures of club members
cars throughout the summer and profiling them
and their owners in the monthly newsletters.
This is the first issue where I am doing this and
I think that it is fitting that we start with the
founder of the club and its first president, Chip
McCann, and his beautiful 1956 Olds 98.
Chip’s car was previously owned by an elderly man who lived in Missouri. He passed away and the car was passed along to his son who lived in Cazenovia. His kids took it for a joy ride one night with a keg of beer in the back seat. The car eventually went off of the road and ended up at Gary Williams’ and John Wilson’s W.W. Collision.
Chip bought the car at W.W. The car has been repainted rose mist and alcan white. The car has been a labor of love for Chip as he has constantly improved on its already good condition to a complete engine rebuild. Chip drives the car regularly and takes it to numerous shows and cruisins’, but with no keg of beer in the backseat.
Caz Cruisins’ have gotten off to a good start thanks to Bill Schaefer and helpers Lisi Schaefer, Gary Williams, John Marion and Patti Haley who oversees the clubs participation. It is interesting to see cars that haven’t been to the Cruisin’ before show up.
Tickets for the annual raffle don’t seem to be moving too rapidly as yet. Although we have six weeks to go, the earlier we can move them the better as I wouldn’t want us to get into a situation of last minute panic selling towards the end. If for some reason you can’t sell your tickets please send them back to Pat Haley at the Club’s mailing address so we don’t have to get additional tickets printed.
The logo committee has submitted its recommended club logo. The logo was reviewed by several members at the June 22nd Cruisin’ with a favorable reaction. Pat will be getting a number of golf type short-sleeved shirts custom made and available for sale. The shirts will be maroon with either a gold or silver club logo on them. I believe that she’ll be getting a few hats as well. They should be available in the next week or so. It would be nice if each member purchased one. The club logo is illustrated above. As I mentioned it will be used on shirts and hats, but also for stationary, envelopes, decals and other appropriate uses.

Be sure to mark July 10th on your calendar for our club cruise. Jim Underwood and Jay Kolts have put together what appears to be a great cruise. We will be departing Canon Park in Caz by 11 am that Sunday. We’ll take route 20 east to route 28 north just before coming to Richfield Springs. We’ll remain on route 28 right into Mohawk where we turn onto East Main St., go about a half-mile and stop for lunch at the Station Restaurant. This is a very nice casual dining facility and lounge that’s decorated in an old railroad theme including a caboose that is used for a dining room. Across the street from the restaurant is a small enclosed strip mall called the “Depot”. Some may want to spend a little time there. From there we pick up route 5S to route 5, go around Utica and continue on route 5 west. For those wanting a break before hitting Vernon there is the Tombstone Tavern just east of Vernon Center. The trip covers about 120 miles, the roads are all good and are mostly rural with the exception of 15 minutes or so going around Utica. I’ll have detailed driving instructions available at Canon Park before we leave. For those needing a ride I am sure that there will be a few seats in members’ cars, or drive your regular car. The rain date is July 17th with the same plan. These events are always more fun when we have a good turn-out.
For members not able to go on the tour, there are a number of other things going on in the area. You may recall that a couple of months ago the Manlius Antique and Classic Car Club asked us to help them with the “Kiwanis Klassics” car show at Lyndon Corners. If you’re interested in helping with parking, judging, etc. plan to show up on Sunday, July 10th in Lyndon at 9-10 am. Ask for Dave Archer or John Morland who will hand out the assignments and identify yourself as being from the Caz Club. I am sure that they would welcome any assistance and it might be a good learning experience, especially if we put together a show at some later date. Events in the area include the annual Krause Classic Car Auction at the Turning Stone Casino on 7/9-10 beginning at 10 am. Other events include: the Destiny Corvette Club show at Bresee Chevrolet in Liverpool, CNY American Truck Historical Society show at Longbranch Park in Liverpool and the Syracuse Nationals on July15-17 at the NY State Fairgrounds.
August 13th, Saturday beginning at noon until when it’s finished is our club’s annual summer picnic. It will be held at Lakeside Park in Cazenovia where we’ll not only be able to partake of Chip’s famous bar-b-que chicken but also good music and lots of great food. Be sure to mark this date on your calendar.
I am enclosing a copy of our new information brochure as prepared by Bob Schefter. We will be putting our logo on it and maybe fine tuning it a little more. If you know of any car enthusiasts who might want to learn a little more about our club this is a handy piece of information to give them.
