MINUTES OF THE MAY 20, 2013 MEETING

Rosemary Hogan-Cunningham called the meeting to order at 6:53 P.M.

MEMBER’S PRESENT: Rosemary Hogan-Cunningham, Chairman, Sue Cannon, William Hamel, Douglas Hamilton, Edward Lanati, Roger Nelson, Barbara Sullivan, and Frances Urbank.

ALSO PRESENT: Ann Marie Claffey, Director, Lori Lapointe, Assistant to the Director, and John Sullivan, Municipal Agent.

ABSENT: Gary McGuire.

PUBLIC: None

SECRETARY’S REPORT: Upon a motion by Barbara Sullivan, and seconded by Frances Urbank; the April 15, 2013 minutes were approved. William Hamel abstained.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Ann Marie Claffey presented the Treasurer’s Report provided by the Finance Dept. Discussion followed on account financial information. William Hamel made a motion to approve the Treasurers Report, seconded by Douglas Hamilton, the motion was approved.

PUBLIC INPUT: N/A.

BUS COORDINATOR’S REPORT: Ann Marie Claffey presented the April 2013 report. Discussion on ridership, trips, schedules, driver’s hours, bus passes, and fees. Upon a motion by Roger Nelson and seconded by Barbara Sullivan, the Bus Coordinators Report was accepted.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT: Ann Marie Claffey presented the Director’s Report.

Ø  Programs and Upcoming events: Dessert Buffet, AARP Safety Driver Course, Travel Night Tour of Distinction Cruise, Military Appreciation Day, Memorial Day Parade, June Picnic. June Highlight for SCAN “New Programs at the Center”: Scraping, Author of the Month-Library, Ask the Nurse-Bickfords & Monthly Educational Programs, Hairdresser, Senior Swim at Pesci, and summer concert series. Locks Fitness Center had approximately 205 visits.

Ø  Chartered Trips include: Connecticut Dixieland Cruise, Deana & Ricci Martin includes Foxwoods Bonus Package, The Schooner Argia Mystic with shopping in downtown Mystic, Tanglewood-Boston Pops with Keith Lockhart and Vince Gill, NOAH at the Millennium Sight & Sound Theater, Deluxe Cape Cod, Best of Bar Harbor, Suffolk Downs, and Rockcats Baseball. A No-Fly Cruise Tour: Charleston, Savannah, and the Caribbean. Also Foxwoods and Mohegan.

Ø  Center Bus Trip to the Connecticut State Library.

Ø  Ann Marie Claffey reported that she tried numerous times to contact representatives from Hillpoint Hotel. She will continue to reach out.

Ø  Bus Pass Fees increase take effect on July 1, 2013. Ann Marie Claffey went over changes to the bus pamphlet, schedule changes, and memo to bus clients outlining changes.

Ø  Silver & Fit-Aetna/CIRMA Risk Assessment has been done. William Hamel made a motion to offer the Aetna Silver & Fit program, seconded by Edward Lanati, the motion was approved.

Ø  Ann Marie Claffey reported that she spoke with Scott Lappen, Director of Public Works, about Senior Center grounds maintenance. He advised her to request quotes from landscaping company that services the Town Hall.

COMMITTEE REPORT AND ACTIONS:

a)  Transportation Committee: Policy and Procedures Recommendations. Douglas Hamilton stated he is reviewing the policy and procedures; and is looking at driver hours of operation, and support for Ann Marie Claffey when dealing with rider hygiene problems. The number of hours some drivers work is exceeding the number of hours the policy recommends.

b)  Community Outreach Committee: No Report.

MUNICIPAL AGENT REPORT: John Sullivan reported the June SCAN will have information on the State of Connecticut Act of requiring a label on genetically engineered foods. There are 32 co-sponsors of the public health committee. John Sullivan is asking everyone to say “No” to genetically engineered foods and genetically modified foods; and notify your congressmen. More information can be found on-line through “Mother Earth News”. The tip of the month is to make peeling an orange easier.

OLD BUSINESS:

a)  Discussion – Trip leaders for center’s Casino Bus Trip. Existing Senior Center trip policies to remain as is.

b)  Coffin Trust – Forming a sub-committee to research property next to Center. Discussion of forming a sub-committee to look at possible grants or funds available, town matching funds, costs associated with purchase of neighboring homes, demolition and paving for additional parking for the center. Sub-committee members are: Roger Nelson, Edward Lanati, and Sue Cannon.

c)  Silver & Fit Insurance Program Update. Covered under Director’s Report.

d)  Hillpoint Hotel Update. Covered under Director’s Report.

e)  Assistant to Director Salary increase status. Rosemary Hogan-Cunningham stated it will be looked at after the budget process. There will be a future discussion of a reclassification and salary review of the Assistant to the Director’s position with the Finance Board. Douglas Hamilton asked why there was no appeal. Rosemary Hogan-Cunningham stated they were asked not to appeal the salary increase.

f)  Beautician service at Center. Covered under Director’s Report.
