Lesson Three—The All-important Pumpkin (PART II)

Pumpkins are popular _(1)_ children, not so much for eating _(2)_ for making jack-o’-lanterns at Halloween. They celebrated a harvest festival on October 31, which was both a joyous and sad occasion. It _(5)_ the beginning of the long, dark, cold winter. The Celts believed that in the darkness, the spirits of the dead walked upon the earth. Great fires were built on the hills to protect the people _(6)_ bad spirits. People hollowed out turnips, and put candles inside _(7)_. They carried them if they went outside to _(8)_ themselves from evil spirits. When the settlers came to America, they brought this _(9)_ with them. They didn’t have turnips, so they used pumpkins _(10)_.
