Proverb Poster

Proverbs survive in the living language of a people because they effectively communicate closely held values and attitudes. Proverbs are meant to convey cultural knowledge and wisdom, and are often closely tied to a culture’s values and everyday experience. As a result, their meanings are not always readily apparent to us today. As seen in Things Fall Apart, proverbs are an important part of Nigerian and Ibo culture. In this mini-project, you will create a four-quadrant poster explaining and updating a proverb, and arguing its importance to its language, tradition, and culture. Below are the requirements for each quadrant:

  • Pick a proverb you encountered while reading or pick one from the list on engrade that interests you. Write this proverb word-for-word in this quadrant.
  • You must draw an image representing the meaning of this proverb.

  • What does the Nigerian proverb reveal to you about Nigerian culture and society?
  • How and why are proverbs passed down from generation to generation?
  • What does the proverb you created mean and when should it be used? Does it offer advice or generally accepted truth?
