This course is designed to develop an understanding of landscape design by assessing soil characteristics and environmental conditions, completing a site analysis checklist,observing and operating graphics design equipment or software to produce a site sketch, and identifying plants and structures used in designing landscapes. On the business side, the student will identify, store, and maintain landscaping hand and power tools and equipment, prepare plant growing sites, install landscape plants and structures, and select and install landscape irrigation systems.

Units of study include the design, construction, and maintenance of planted areas and devices for the beautification of home grounds and other areas of human habitation and recreation. Activities include performing turf grass services such as mowing, renovating, fertilizing, pesticide application, weed control, and watering.

This course includes the study of the management practices of field and greenhouse production of foliage and floral crops. Emphasis is placed on the commercial practices of purchasing, cultural production, storage, handling, and sales of cut flowers and potted plant crops. The chain-of-life concept is discussed as it relates to the consumer’s aesthetic use of cut flowers and plants.

In this course, students will learn about specific floral holidays and seasons and will make various arrangements for these special days. Students will also cover Contemporary Floral Designs and arrangements made from artificial materials. They will demonstrate and participate in choosing the proper flowers, foliage and container for the appropriate High Style Designs. Topiaries, European, Colonial, Oriental, Celebration and centerpiece designs will be introduced. Students will practice wreath, swags, window displays, Christmas and Seasonal decorating. Markup, pricing and profit will be covered.

In this course, the student is expected to recognize the importance and interrelationships of soil and plants; practice soil and plant evaluation as it applies to agricultural and urban settings, explain the relationship of biotic and abiotic factors within habitats and ecosystems, analyze soil science as related to food and fiber production, describe the relationship between resources within environmental systems, describe the origin and use of water in a watershed, map the process of soil formation as influenced by weathering, including erosion processes due to water, wind, and mechanical factors influenced by climate, explain how petroleum energy resources affect agriculture, evaluate components of plant science as it relates to crop production, identify how plants grow and how specialized cells, tissues, and organs develop, diagram the structure and function of nucleic acids in the mechanism of genetics, explain the chemistry involved in plants at the cellular level, and identify the sources and flow of energy through environmental systems.

This lab-based course prepares students for careers in the field of animal science and livestock production. Animal species to be addressed in this course may include, but are not limited to, beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, goats, and poultry.

Students will be provided with opportunities to learn, reinforce, and apply information in a variety of settings in the areas of small animal, systems/business and associations. Study will also highlight ownership, hazards, and welfare of small animals.

Food Processing Science applies fundamental scientific principles to the research, development, manufacturing, packaging, storage, and marketing of all types of food products including fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, dairy products and further processed foods. This applied, laboratory-based course, with a focus on food processing, is designed to educate you about functional components of foods, food safety, nutrition, sensory evaluation, quality assurance, new product development, food chemistry, food processing, engineering, and much more.
