Kiker Addressed the Committee on the Following Points:

  • LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE: Will be the committee that comes together to discuss the concerns of the staff.
  • SIT COMMITTEE: Will only address SIP goals and how/if we are meeting them
  • SIT committee will be changing its look from years in the past
  • We will be writing a plan that will focus on things for the school
  • SIP will be written for the next 2 years
  • SIP will be a living document
  • Our overall goals will be in Reading and Math (required areas of improvement)
  • Ms. Kiker would like to have representatives from the Cafeteria, Front Office and Mrs. Rode (MTSS)
  • Focus for the first meeting will be to develop goals
  • SIT meeting will look at school’s goals each month to see if we are meeting, improving, or what we need to change to make our goals
  • SIP will be easier to read will Holly Shelter “I cans” of “Holly Shelter will be able to….”
  • Teachers will be able to write lesson plans to reflect the SIP
  • SIP goals are to be short and concise
  • Report Card will be out in February and to quote Kiker “HSMS is not pretty” – we are considered a Priority School, we did not meet any or our target areas
  • Our SIP goals need to be attainable ways that we can truly improve test scores
  • EVASS can be used to show the data where we can help our students not only with SIP but MTSS

COMMITTEE DISCUSSED STRATEGIES THAT OUR SCHOOL USES

(this will help support SIP goals that are to be written)

  • Encore Math (Mr. Bruce’s class)
  • Ms. Kiker is in hopes to get an On Core Reading class next year
  • Math/ELA Mastery (40 minutes)
  • V Math
  • Vocab Journey
  • Tutoring
  • Peer Tutoring (NJHS and Laney High School Students –students will increase their understanding of the content there are tutoring in and may have different ways of explaining something to another student)
  • Kagan Strategies
  • STAE Strategies
  • Academic Vocabulary
  • San Diego Reading Assessment
  • Mentor
  • Who? Community members, Colleges, Retirees
  • What would they do?
  • They could be working in small groups
  • Guest speakers in Auditorium and face-to-face
  • Watch Dogs – how can we use them better as tutors/mentors?

  • Ms. Kiker hopes to get the $ for people for hands on tutoring instead of a computer program
  • Our school did not show enough growth to say this program worked
  • Winter Park showed growth with the program but they had additional volunteers come in from local church
  • Within the goals, SIT members discussed the importance of preparing students for college and helping students develop student worth
  • Help students develop student worth
  • Bringing in Speakers not just to talk in auditorium, but face to face
  • Watch Dogs – how can we use them better as tutors/mentors

Mrs. Sechrist (Parent Rep.) asked:

  • How can we identify students to help them go from 3’s to 4’s, 4’s to 5’s, etc?
  • How can we focus on growing our children?
  • Students don’t need to be just numbers

Asked/Addressed by Committee

  • How can we make students care?
  • Students to make goals – what is after High School?
  • I cans for after High School/I will go to college
  • Staff to get involved by wearing college shirts/trade shirts (will continue to discuss at October’s Leadership)
  • How can we email parents to see who would be willing to come out to speak, tutor, mentor students? (Can we do this through Power School?)
  • Every 2nd Friday – get mentors to come in regularly to spend time with us

GOALS THAT COMMITTEE CAME UP WITH AFTER DISCUSSIONS

Holly Shelter will be able to increase grade level proficiency in Reading to 70% as measured by EOGs.

Goal to continue to discuss October 22nd

This is the 3rd goal that we started to write, but tabled until we meet again.

Holly Shelter will use mentor (add something about self worth/preparing for college/career ready) (use PBIS wording)
