Match report Round 3, 5 May 2012
Despite foggy, chilly conditions for the round one games, players were no less enthusiastic or energetic and some lively matches ensued.
The section 1 game between Blitz and Sadida was reasonably even around the court, with the biggest difference being Sadida goal defence Gemma Enever’s ability to make it difficult for her opposition shooters to get the ball into the goalring. Team mate Llewella Gunner, playing centre, covered the court well, and fed her shooters effectively. Chloe Thrum, for Blitz worked tirelessly in defense to try to stem Sadida’s access to the post.
Tenacious in section 2 were able to hold off All Sorts for a 3 goal victory. Goal Keeper Kristen Ritchens made some timely interceptions for the winners, whilst Zahidah Khan in attack played an important role. Hannah Elcock was a strong contributor for All Sorts.
The sun broke through, to make conditions much more comfortable for players and spectators after round 1.
In section 3, Red Ribbons proved too strong for Fluoros, with goal attack Sarah Stone showing her class, with good use of court space and exceptional ball skills. Emma Powell in defense repelled Fluoro’s attack, driving her team into attack with regularity. Fluoros’ centre Chloe Stanley was the best player for her side.
Dominators came away with a 4 goal win against Blaze, in section 5 , with both these very young teams demonstrating their future potential. Goal keeper, Ella Kent played strongly for Dominators, with Gabrielle Wales defending well for Blaze. Other players to come under notice, were Ellie Laffy, Amy Ashton, Jess Gehrig, Tess Larkin and Olivia Beazley.
Sounding rather like something from a lolly shop, Sweet Treats, defeated Sugar Balls, in section 6, with good accurate goal shooting from Molly Campbell, whilst Marly Steene fed the ball into the circle to good effect. Rhyanna Hutchins as goal shooter and Laura O’Brien in defense were best players for Sugar Balls. Goal shooer Josie Behrendt, Wing attack, Olivia Gamble and goal keeper, Lucy Novak, led the way in Milawa/Oxley’s, impressive win over Netty Betties, who were well served by Macey Gillman and Rebecca Johnstone. Banana Splits defeated Star Struck, with a classy attacking combination, in Jorja Reidy, Matilda Bedendo and Georgia Mahoney. Rebecca Lewis and Leah Stokes battled doggedly for Star Struck.
Following normal competition the Net Set Go program took place. 200 young netballers take part in this session, which consists of skill tuition for 1st year participants and modified matches for 2nd year players. This program relies on volunteer parents and friends, much like football’s AusKick, and has grown remarkedly in 2012, which should prove a asset to the future of district netball.
11am next Saturday, sees the introduction of an “All Abilities” program, an exciting initiative of CARN, and WNA with support from Netball Victoria.
With 4 representative teams taking part in district tournaments leading to the zone championships, the Wangaratta Netball Association calendar is full and rewarding.
