Configuring Microsoft Windows10 for eduroam @ Salford.ac.uk

Introduction

The following steps show how to correctly configure the eduroam Service on a Windows 10 PC to allow you to connect to the University Of Salford.

Configuration Steps

  1. Right-click the Wi-Fi Icon on the Notification area near the bottom right of the desktop and left-click “Open Network and Sharing Center”
  2. When the Network and Sharing Center window opens, click on “Set up a new connection or network”

  1. Then click on “Manually connect to a wireless network” to start the wizard


  1. Configure the next screen as shown below:

  1. Click Next to create the profile and then click on “Change connection settings”
  1. Ensure the connection tab looks like this:


  1. Click the Security tab and un-tick “Remember my credentials for this connection each time I’m logged on”.
  1. Then under ‘Choose a network authentication method:’ to right of ‘Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) click on the ‘Settings’ button:
  1. This will open up the ‘Protected EAP Properties’ window. Scroll down under ‘Trusted Root Certification Authorities’ to the ‘QuoVadisRoot CA 3’ certificate and click in the box to the left of this (to put a tick to select this certificate). Under ‘Select Authentication Method’ ensure ‘Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) is selected and click on the ‘Configure’ button:

IMPORTANT: ensure you tick the correct QuoVadis Root CA 3 certificate as without this step you will NOT be able to connect to eduroam. If in doubt please ensure you tick ALL of the QuoVadis certificate options.

  1. This will open the ‘EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties’ box. Un-tick the box to the left of ‘Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)’ option. Note: if this is checked you will NOT be able to authenticate with the eduroam service.

  1. Now click on the “Advanced settings” button.
  1. On the next dialog, tick “Specify Authentication Method” and choose “User Authentication”
  1. Then click on the “802.11 settings” tab and un-tick “Enable Pairwise Master Key (PMK) caching

  1. Click “OK” and “Close” until all dialogs are closed
  1. The eduroam network is now configured for Windows 10 and will show in list of available networks.

Connecting to eduroam

Now that we have configured the correct authentication requirements, we should be ready to connect to eduroam.

Click on the Wi-Fi icon on the Notification area and then on eduroam:

You should be prompted for your network authentication:

IMPORTANT: You must enter it in the format shown above replacing “userid” your Universitye-mail addresssuffixed by @salford.ac.uk (example: ). Please ensure you enter your e-mail address correctly including letters, numbers and dots. Your password should be your normal login password.

You should now be connected to eduroam.
