FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ELLIOT LAKE, ON—The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Elliot Lake regrets to inform the public that the Centennial Arena has been closed pending necessary repairs to the facility. On February 25th, 2016, municipal staff reported the presence of significant damage to structural beams in the facility. The Chief Building Officer inspected the situation and, in consultation with the Chief Administrative Officer, issued a “Do Not Occupy” order. A structural engineer was called in and reviewed the situation to determine whether a risk to public safety was present. Under the advice of the Engineer, the facility will remain closed until contractors can undertake work to ensure the strength and safety of the affected beams.
In speaking to the situation, Mayor Dan Marchisella, noted that “while the temporary closure of the facility is unfortunate, I am very appreciative of the quick response that city staff had to this situation. It is never an easy decision to close a public facility, but our staff acted quickly and in a manner consistent with our Council’s priority on ensuring public safety. I look forward the facility re-opening to the public shortly.”
The City of Elliot Lake currently expects the necessary repairs to the facility to be completed over the weekend. Once repairs are completed, an additional review by the structural engineer will be conducted to ensure the safety of the structure before opening. It is expected that the facility will reopen early next week.
