“Fundamentals of Coaching Soccer” NFHS Coaches’ Education online course. Cost is $50.00

Course Description: A study of coaching strategies, skills, techniques, and tactics for Soccer. This includes organization and administration of a soccer program in the public schools. Students will participate in activities that include classroom lecture, labs, coaching assignments, and a project. In addition, students will investigate online professional organizations and their contributions to rules, regulations, and the coaching profession.

Course Objectives:

·  Students will develop a personal coaching philosophy and how it relates to coaching strategies

·  Students will investigate and study techniques that develop positive coaching actions when interacting with students, parents, and other professionals. This includes: Motivation, Communication, Sportsmanship, and Professional Conduct.

·  Students will learn how to implement a soccer program within a public school setting utilizing the calendar, UNIVERSITY INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE requirements, tryouts, conditioning, and administrative tasks.

·  Students will learn the basic concepts of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning and how it relates to the success of a soccer program.

·  Students will learn how to effectively conduct and organize practice sessions with emphasis on individual and team skills.

·  Students will learn individual and team strategies and concepts that can be implemented during practice and game situations

·  Students will gain a better understanding of the Professional Associations affiliated with the sport of soccer and their influences on coaching the sport. This includes rules and regulations.

EVALAUATION:

20% Mid Term Exam

20% Final Exam

20% Lab Participation

Students will participate in 13 labs during the semester. This is a subjective grade dependent upon the student’s ability to follow directions, participate fully, and lead the class in warm up and drills as directed by the instructor. Professional conduct and sportsmanship are an integral component of coaching; labs give students the opportunity to practice these concepts. Lab activities also improve knowledge of

skills required to coach soccer on a competitive level. Students will be required to dress in athletic

sports clothing for each lab. This includes shorts/sweats, t-shirt, socks, and running shoes. Metal cleats

are not allowed. In addition, each student must supply his / her own shin guards. Please refer to attendance policy for additional understanding.

20% Class Activities and Homework Assignments

Students will participate in nine classroom activities aimed towards improving knowledge and understanding of the sport and the development of coaching skills.

Students must complete two online homework assignments that increase their knowledge of Heat Acclimatization and Sportsmanship within the school and coaching environment. These are available online at the NFHS Coaching Education website. Both of these courses are free. The student will turn in a certificate of completion for each course (2) on Wednesday, April 3, 2012 to the instructor.

10% Coaching Assignments

Students will be assigned two coaching duties during the semester in which he / she will instruct others.

Dates for the coaching assignments are included in the outline. A grading rubric will be provided by the instructor.

10% Project

Completion of NFHS Coaching Education Course: “Fundamentals of Coaching Soccer

The cost of this online course is $50.00 and will aid the student to develop coaching skills that will be demonstrated in class. Completion deadline for this course is Monday, January 28, 2012. The student will turn in a certificate of completion to the instructor on this date.

ATTENDANCE:

Attendance in class is mandatory. An absence or the inability to participate during a lab will result in a zero for that day. Late arrival to a lab will result in a 25 point reduction for every 15 minutes the student is not present. Class activities, or labs missed because of an absence or tardy will not be made up.

It is the responsibility of the student to secure information when he/she is absent and recover any material or assignments that may have been missed because of an absence or tardy. Since most grades will be given daily, each individual is strongly encouraged to attend on a regular basis and in accordance with North Texas University policy.

CELL PHONES: Cell phone use is NOT permitted in class or labs without the approval of the instructor.

COMMUNICATION: Students can view grades, notifications, and a calendar of events on BLACKBOARD. The class syllabus and outline is also posted along with links for outside reading.
