Where should we distribute the cards to people who need them?
Here is a quick list of possible distribution points to jump start your work: churches, banks, hotels, schools, restaurants, businesses, VITA sites, doctor’s offices, United Way partner agencies and other community partners.
Why should we use Coast2Coast over another similar program?
Coast2Coast is providing more than a simple discount prescription card, they are reinvesting in building local communities through United Way by supporting your work with monetary contributions. They are also providing a robust list of additional discount medical services that can be accessed using their Rx cards.
What does the United Way State Association get?
Coast2Coast will make an additional investment in system-wide work happening in at the state level through the UW State Association. State Associations will receive $.35 cents for each prescription filled. The donation will help support ongoing statewide system initiatives.
But Where Does the Money Come From?
- Through the negotiated contract, participating pharmacies are sharing a portion of their profit margin by providing the discounts for the medications. Pharmacies provide the discounts to cardholders to drive business to their stores, create loyalty with customers, and provide foot traffic in hopes that customers will buy other items while in their establishment. So the card seeks to generate business in some of the same ways as when a store employs a “loss leader” strategy to draw in consumers.
- Pharmacies are giving up a part of the professional/administrative fee that they charge on all prescriptions except the usual and customary drugs (usually low cost generics). The pharmacies are paying discount card vendors such as Coast2Coast a marketing/advertising fee for driving in business. The pharmacies would keep the portion of the fee they pay to discount card vendors if the person came in without the discount card. Therefore, someone without insurance or without a discount card will pay this fee along with their medication cost.
We’re in! How do we get started?
Your first step is to complete and sign the included Memorandum of Understanding with your State Association because they will hold the umbrella contract with Coast2Coast for the state. Then, we’ll begin developing your materials, your media announcements and your web links to support your local launch of the program. Once your program launches, you will begin distributing localized cards in your community. The more they are used, the more benefits your United Way will reap to invest in the community.
