2Definition
Fire and rescue service provider’s requirements refer to policies and procedures on safety and operation set down by each fire and rescue service employer or host organisation.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Demonstrate knowledge of navigation toolsused by a fire and rescue service provider.
Rangemap, manual compass, electronic compass.
Performance criteria
1.1Map features and their functions are identified using a variety of maps.
Rangefeatures may include but are not limited to – scales, symbols, grid lines, contours, shading, legend;
maps may include but are not limited to – park, NZMS 260, NZTopo50, topographical maps, provincial series maps, forest inventory maps.
1.2An accurate position is fixed on a topographical map using a six-figure grid reference and map number.
1.3The uses of a compass are identified and demonstrated.
Rangeuses must include but are not limited to – measuring distances on a map, orientating the map north, taking and following bearings.
1.4Magnetic and grid bearings are explained and converted.
Element 2
Identify and report alocation using maps.
Rangelocation may include but is not limited to – fire, water point, airfield, helibase or helipad, assembly area, emergency operations centre, incident control point, cordons, safe forward point, staging area, triage area.
Performance criteria
2.1Location is pinpointed to within 100 metres in accordance with the fire and rescue service provider’s requirements.
2.2Location is reported in accordance with fire and rescue service provider’s requirements.
Element 3
Select a route for navigation to a vegetation fire.
Performance criteria
3.1Identification of features on maps enables route selection for on-foot, vehicle, and aircraft access.
Rangefeatures may include but are not limited to – hills, slopes, valleys, spurs, cliffs, rivers, creeks, swamps,roads, tracks, bridges, fords, structures, power lines, telephone lines, railway lines,availability and nature of roads and tracks, degree of slope, river crossings, vegetation cover, angle of approach to the fire.
3.2Route distance and trip time are calculated in accordance with the fire and rescue service provider’s requirements.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
