MOCAN Schools Work Group Meeting

Local Wellness Policy revision-
USDA recently released their regulations that require schools to update their local wellness policy. In 2004 a MOCAN subcommittee worked with MSBA to develop a MO Model Wellness Policy that was adopted by many MSBA members. The MSBA attorney Kelli Hopkins is interested in working with a MOCAN work group again to update the existing MSBA policy.

Cindy will send an email to the Schools Work group to give those who weren’t able to participate in the call today to participate on the committee. The deadline to volunteer will be 9/30.
The target for the first meeting will be mid-October possibly at MSBA.
Work Plan revisions
The work plan needs to be reviewed at the October MOCAN meeting and finalized.
Updates:
Midwest Dairy
60 schools received equipment grants to increase school breakfast capacity.
No Kids Hungry in MO is a program at DSS. They are funded by a Community Development Block Grant. Midwest Dairy is partnering with DSS on this program.Grants up to $3,000 to schools for equipment are being provided with these funds. The deadline to apply for this grant is the end of September.
Alliance for a Healthier Generation
They are planning a summit March 21-22 likely in Monett MO. They would like to have partners participate on the summit.
St. Louis Dairy Council
11,000 classrooms are participating in the FTS program in which they adopted a cow. It is a preK-2nd grade to learn about the life of a calf. The students receive monthly updates from the farmer.
MSBA
No updates.
MU Extension
The Eat Smart in Parks efforts to increase healthy concessions in parks are being expanded to schools. Some MFH grantees are already working on healthy school concessions. Currently, Extension is in the discovery phase to understand the existing school concessions environment.
DESE
National School lunch week is in October. USDA will be visiting the SLPS. MFH has funded a 2 year position at DESE to increase the number of schools that participate in Community Eligibility Provision. Currently 84 LEAS participate in CEP. Only 36% of eligible MO LEAs participate. However, unless schools have around 60% F/R eligible they often can’t afford to participate in CEP.
BJC
They arecelebrating their 25th anniversary with a Tools for Helping Community Youth conference in St. Louis.
Next week is MPHA annual conference.
There is an increase in request for BJC services.
