VI. Course Description: This course introduces the student to a practical knowledge and application of the principles necessary for the promotion and supervision of fitness activities. Fitness facilities and equipment, their development and utilization will be discussed in detail. The development and design of an exercise program for the average adult will be emphasized. Exercise activities for special populations are introduced. Marketing of services in health and fitness facilities are also discussed.

VII.  Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, the student will:

·  Participate in college-wide fitness orientation for the PCCC Fitness Center

·  Participate in a college–wide Fitness Fair and perform fitness testing/measurement

·  Demonstrate proficiency in the operation of key pieces of exercise equipment including Cardiovascular and Weight Machines

·  Develop and design an exercise program for the average adult

·  Describe and use safety measures when operating all exercise equipment

·  Design an exercise class and instruct the class to fellow students

VIII.  Course Outline:

Weeks 1- 6

A.  Fitness testing and measurement culminating in a college wide Fitness Fair.

B.  Participation in on-going college- wide student orientation for the fitness center

Weeks 7-10

C.  Learn exercise protocols for a variety of fitness equipment- weight machines, Dumbbells, Rubber Bands, Body Bars, Medicine & Fitness Balls, etc.

Weeks 11-12

D.  Develop individual exercise programs.

Week 13

E.  Lead an exercise session consisting of a warm-up, workout and cool-down

Week 14-15

F.  Review and evaluate a fitness facility. Managing the facility.

Marketing.

Final Week

X. METHODS of EVALUATION

Your grade will be composed of the following:

Practical Skills 40%

Exercise Participation 20% *

Class Projects 20% **

Practical and Written Assignments 20%
*Attendance to all classes is mandatory. You must contact me to explain an absence. All homework, and Demonstrations must be made up.

** Project 1- Evaluating a health/wellness or fitness club.

Procedure: visit a club; rate the club using the Health Club Observation. Write a paper to discuss your conclusions about the quality of the club and whether it would fit your needs if you wanted to join.

Project 2- Design an Exercise Session and teach it
