Humanities PBL Outline:

□ Significant Content – Current Events, Real-World Issues and Connection to Literature and History of the Americas and Uncontacted tribes including Polynesian and African

□ 21st Century Competencies/Technology – Students share their knowledge through a technology-based presentation (PSA via Wevideo, or iMovie, or moviemaker) after completing online research

□ In-Depth Inquiry – Students are given parameters/guiding questions to drive their research and then use a variety of online resources/research sources/documentary to gather information.

□ Driving Question – What are the consequences and benefits of integrating uncontacted tribes into modern society and should we continue to integrate or keep the tribes isolated? What solutions can you provide based on your position?

□ Need to Know /Real World Application – We firmly believe that students need to be better educated on real-world issues and current events. This project allows us to relate literature and history to an important topic.

□ Voice and Choice /Student Input – Students are given a variety of tribes to choose from and in some classes they will be able to choose their own groups. They will also choose their own format for their video.

□ Public Audience for Presentation – We are going to attempt join/switch our classes in the theater if time, and we will be asking the audio visual class to run the best PSAs on the school news program emailed to teachers on Fridays.

Possible Lesson Outlines:

Daily Warm-Up: Start with a group -meeting. Work together to decide on 3 specific goals your group will accomplish today.
Work Session: Work on the PBL! Remember that each person should have an individual responsibility but as a group you all must work together to ensure the project is completed. Have a back up plan. If someone is absent, that does not excuse your group from having that part done.
FOR FILMING: Only 2-3 groups may go out to film at one time. First come, first served. Bring me proof of your script/planning in order to get your passes.
Closing: Complete the daily progress report. Please be specific about what is done, what challenges you had, and who did what. Please note who was absent as well.
Standards:
Work with a diverse group of peers.
Create a presentation using diverse media.
Conduct an extended research project to solve a problem.
Write persuasively.
