Betty Strasenburgh Award for Activism

This award, named in honor of Rochester activist Betty Strasenburgh, underscores the importance of civic spirit, persistence, and determination that translates visions into reality. It recognizes individuals who have made a personal effort to go beyond conventional boundaries to achieve a goal. It recognizes a creative idea that may have transformed a particular process or inspired a piece of writing.

Nominations for this award will be drawn from within the nine-county region surrounding Rochester, NY that is served by the Community Design Center. Nominations will be accepted from the general public. A jury, made up of individuals from a range of backgrounds, will determine the winner and honorable-mention recipient.

Nominations are judged according to the following criteria:

  • Passion, endurance and advocacy to move forward a difficult undertaking that may have included multiple steps and phases
  • Actions that exhibited a visible change in a community to meet community needs
  • Achievements that have made a categorical change in a place
  • Efforts to involve community members who would then also pursue challenging paths

Process

All materials should be mailed or hand delivered to the Design Center, 1115 East Main Street, Door #4, Rochester, New York 14609.

Step One: Nominations

Nomination Requirements:

  • Complete the simple online form.
  • Provide a brief description (250 words or less) of the project, program, organization or individual being nominated including purpose, accomplishments and impact. Nominations cannot be accepted without this summary.
  • Attach visual samples of the project or individual nominated. This can include URLs, web links, and/orimages submitted on one CD or DVD.
  • Submissions will be accepted from August 1 – September 15, 2017

Step Two: Finalist Selection

  • Finalists are selected
  • Finalists notified: September 22, 2017
  • Finalists announced to public

Step Three: Finalist Submissions

Finalists will be contacted to submit additional materials including:

  • A concise description (500 words or less) of the project, program, organization or individual including purpose, accomplishments and impact.
  • Two written testimonials/letters of support as to the credibility of the applicant’s work.
  • 5-10 digital images (resolution of 400 dpi and horizontal format). Images can be submitted on one CD that includes the other nomination materials or through a file sharing service such as Dropbox, Retransfer, Hightail etc. to .
  • Images for projects should illustrate the nominated project, organization, or individual. Images should illustrate various aspects of the project or program – before and after conditions, overall exteriors from a variety of angles, interior shots. Images should include people and activity around the site, including an image of the project in the context of the greater community.
  • Images for individual achievement must include at least two different headshots of the nominee, and the nominee in action. The balance should illustrate the body of work for which the individual is being nominated.
  • All images must be labeled; include a credit line for publication.

Incomplete submissions cannot be accepted.

Step 4: Winners Announced

  • The winner and honorable mention will be announced on November 16, 2017 at the Annual Reshaping Rochester Awards Luncheon to be held at Temple B’rith Kodesh.
