Did You Know? Each year, more than 200,000 people in the U.S. are hospitalized and about 36,000 die from influenza, making it the sixth leading cause of death.

The flu alone kills more Americans each year than all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that the flu vaccine is the single best way to prevent the flu. Save yourself; get vaccinated!

No More Excuses! This Way to the Flu Free Zone

Below is a list of common reasons people give for not getting the flu vaccine. Next to the reasons, you will see a clarifications or solution to relieve anxiety about the flu vaccine. There are very few good reasons to reject the flu shot. Don’t yield to the myths and excuses! Take caution; stop the flu bug in its tracks.

REASON / CLARIFICATION or SOLUTION
“I don’t get sick.” / The flu vaccine doesn’t just protect you. It protects your family, friends,customers and co-workers. You could have no flu symptoms and still be a carrier and unknowingly spread it.
“I got the flu shot once, and it gave me the flu.” / It is impossible for the flu vaccine to give you the flu. The regular flu vaccine contains a killed virus, which cannot cause disease.
“I am afraid of needles.” / A nasal spray vaccine is available, so no needle is required.
“I am pregnant.” / Expectant mothers are at a higher risk of complication if they get the flu. The CDC recommends flu vaccines for expectant mothers, regardless of trimester. According to a recent study, an inactivated vaccine given to pregnant women resulted in reduced flu illness by 63% in infants up to six months of age. The vaccine averted approximately one-third of all febrile respiratory illnesses in mothers and infants.
“I am allergic to Thimerosal.” / MedStar has inactivated flu vaccine in syringes which do not contain Thimerosal. Its also called, preservative-free.

Good reasons NOT to receive the flu vaccine:

  • You have a severe allergy to chicken eggs.
  • You have had a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination.
  • You developed Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) within six weeks of getting an influenza vaccine.
  • You are less than six months of age (influenza vaccine is not approved for this age group), or;
  • You have a moderate-to-severe illness with a fever (wait until you recover to get vaccinated.)
