Thank you for participating in the [Faculty/Centre] Plagiarism Hearing held on (Date of hearing) to consider the report of plagiarism against you.

The claim was in relation to your assessment task (Title of Assessment Task), which was undertaken in (Course Title), (Semester Number, Year). The reported plagiarism was about(details of incident, e.g. copying from another student’s assessment task).

University Regulation 6.1.1- Plagiarism expressly states the disciplinary action/s that the Executive Dean/Director of Faculty/Centre or nominee may impose from the evidence provided at the hearing, and these are as follows:

“3. (5)After considering the evidence provided by the assessor and the student’s submission the nominated person may:

[a]find the student has not plagiarised and reverse the forfeiture of credit or if the assessor had not assessed the task prior to applying the automatic forfeiture of credit in sub- section 2(1) or 2(2) return the task to the assessor to assess; or

[b]confirm the forfeiture of credit; or

[c]require the student to be re-assessed in the relevant assessable task or course.”

In this instance, the report of plagiarism has been upheld, as you were not able to provide any satisfactory explanation againstthe claim of plagiarism. As this is your first recorded incident,a result of zero will be recordedfor the assessment task, in accordance with University Regulation 6.1.1 – Plagiarism, Section 2(1).Additionally, your details will be recorded on the University’s Plagiarism Register.

The [Faculty (Name of Faculty)/Centre] would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the importance of ensuring that all work you present is appropriately cited and referenced, and ensuring also that other students do not have the opportunity to copy your work. You have the right to appeal this decision. Please refer to Regulation 6.1.1 – Plagiarism for information regarding rights of appeal against this decision.You will find a link to the document at the end of this letter.

Regulation 6.1.1 – Plagiarism states that:

“4.(1)A student may appeal to the University Appeals Committee against the finding orpenalty imposed by a nominated person under paragraphs 3(5)[b] or 3(5)[c].

(2)An appeal must be lodged in writing with the Secretary to the University Appeals Committee within 7 working days of the date of the decision appealed against and must be based on one, or both, of the following grounds:

[a]new evidence, not known to the student at the date of the decision being appealed, which becomes apparent since the date of that decision;

[b]irregularity of procedure in the recommending making of the decision appealed against; and/or the making of the decision appealed against;

which must be stated by the appellant in the notice of appeal. The Chair of the University Appeals Committee may, in exceptional circumstances, extend the period for lodgement of an appeal.”
