JANUARY 2016 NEWS

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

As we start this New Year it is worth noting that the Holton News is produced by team of volunteers who work throughout the year to print and collate, distribute and deliver it. A lot of effort is put in every month so that every household can have a free copy of the magazine, with its information about local groups and services, and the whole team deserve a very big THANK YOU.

C.A.R.E. Daily Bread Food Larder

January is the month when we collect tinned and dried food for C.A.R.E. , who make up emergency parcels for distribution to those in desperate need. Collection boxes will be in Church where any donations of tins, cartons or packets e.g. pasta, will be gladly received, or if anyone would like us to collect donations from their homes, please ring Sue Borman 824898 or Margaret Wilkinson 590896. Thankyou.

POP IN Saturday 9th January, 10.00 am to 12.00 noon in the Church Extension. Pop in and meet your friends. Tombola, Bring and Buy. Entrance 50p including refreshments. Everyone welcome.

PIANIST WANTED for a new choir in the village to perform small concerts for charitable purposes. I’m also interested to hear from people who would like to join a choir – anything from Beatles to Bach and back again. Liz Cullen 824717 or 0781 88 88 707

VILLAGE HALL The first concert run in the village hall as part of the Lincolnshire Rural and Community Touring Programme was very successful, with around 80 villagers and friends attending an evening of great music and fun. One villager who shall remain nameless ended up playing the rear end of a pantomime horse!

ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES

A musical comedy about Charles Darwin. This was an Edinburgh Festival sell out and has had many great reviews. With 15 parts, all played by John Hinton, it is packed with big theories, terrible puns, brilliant physical comedy and six cracking original songs about everything from blasted boring barnacles to the perils of marrying your cousin.

Quote from The Stage magazine – “Science can rarely have been so fascinating and rarely so much fun!”

Adelaide Theatre Guide "John Hinton is an absolute joy"

THE SECRETS OF SUCCESS

Have you ever heard people offer to tell you ‘the secrets of success’ for a very high price? Go to any bookshop and you will find shelves of books offering you the keys to success. Look up ‘the secrets of success’ on an internet search engine and you will receive over 12 million hits.

I am going to give you five secrets of success, and I’m not even going to charge you for this valuable information! ‘Secret’ No1 – People Dealing with other people can

be difficult, but we all know we should be well mannered and polite. You cannot

6

please everybody and people can sometimes be awkward or rude. However, you must always be respectful and polite, and always treat people as you would like to be treated. ‘Secret’ No 2 - Hard work. Despite what many people have said, it’s not easy to get rich overnight or to pass all your exams without revising - it just doesn’t happen. To be successful you will need to work, and work hard. Thomas Edison, the most successful inventor of all time, once said, ‘There is no substitute for hard work.’ ‘Secret’ No3 – Commitment. You will need to make a commitment to success. You must be willing to make sacrifices and work long hours. This will not happen overnight – it could take years. Are you prepared for years of frustration, hard work, ups and downs, dealing with people (good and bad), rejections and everything else that comes along with success? ‘Secret’ No4 – Pride Take pride in your work. Your work will be a reflection of you. For success, build up a reputation for solid, good work. Be true to yourself and your work. ‘Secret’ No 5 – Goals Be aware of what you want and how you want to get it. Don’t go ahead blindly without some planning of your goals and accomplishments. Use short term, smaller goals to reach your long–term, ultimate goal. This will keep any fear of failure at bay too. Of course, these so– called ‘secrets’ are mostly common sense. We all know these ‘secrets’. We just have to apply them and use them consistently.

Time for reflection

You’ve failed many times. Although you may not remember, you fell down the first time you tried to walk. You almost drowned the first time you tried to swim, didn’t you? Did you hit the ball the first time you swung a bat or racquet? Novelist John Creasey got 753 rejection slips before he published 564 books. Don’t worry about failure. Worry about the chances you miss when you don’t even try. To be a star, you must shine your own light, follow your own path, and not worry about the darkness, for that is when stars shine brightest.
