STUDYGROUP PROFILE

·  Maximum 300 participants.

·  The group may include educators who are teachers, directors, principals, school superintendents, pedagogical coordinators and consultants in infant-toddler centers, preschools, kindergarten, and elementary schools; parents of young children; undergraduate and graduate students; college/university professors; political leaders, foundation staff, funders and others involved in work with children.

·  Individuals will have some knowledge about the Reggio Emilia experience, its theories and values, through readings, attendance at Reggio-related conferences, visiting “The Hundred Languages of Children” exhibit or the new exhibit, “The Wonder of Learning,” and through their own practiceindividually and collegially.

·  Participants are encouraged to attend with a colleague or in small groups to maximize the potential of this learning experience upon returning to their own contexts.

·  Prior study group participants as well as first time visitors are welcome to attend.

PROGRAM

The venue for the week is the International Center Loris Malaguzzi and all its resources including the exhibition hall, the auditorium and meeting rooms, the atelier/workshop spaces, and the Center for Documentation and Educational Research. The Study Group Program will begin on Sunday, May 2 and will end on Friday, May 7, 2010.

The organization of the program during the week offers:

·  background and history of the Reggio Emilia educational project and projections toward the future

·  visits to Infant Toddler Centers and Preschools of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia

·  presentations on the values and principles ofthe Reggio philosophy

·  presentations of research projects carried out in the Infant Toddler Centers and Preschools of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia

·  topics including: the image of the competent child; teachers as researchers; observation, interpretation and documentation; children with special rights; the role of the environment; the pedagogy of listening; materials and the 100 languages of children; parents’ involvement in the life of the school; and ReMida center for recycled materials

·  time and space to interact with other participants and Reggio educators on specific occasions when opportunities will be given to dialogue and exchange experiences and reflections

·  cultural encounters within the city of Reggio Emilia

PARTICIPATION FEE: $3120 / $3020 (NAREA members)

Payment is in U.S. currency. The inclusive participation fee is for all study group program-related costs (see below) and is based on double occupancy accommodations. Services of International Study Tours include:

- hotel accommodations for 7 nights based on double occupancy; single room supplement is $455; accommodations at the Ghiara Youth Hostel are also available

- buffet breakfast daily at hotel and youth hostel

- courtesy round trip private bus transportationbetween Reggio Emilia and airports at set times

- credit card services, foreign currency transfer fees, administrative services and taxes

- coordination of the study group experience with the intention of supporting the professional development, collaboration, dialogue and collegiality of the participants

- welcome lunch reception and introductory meeting

Fee to Reggio Children S.r.l. (1150 Euro) includes:

- the organization of the program

- presentations by and meetings with pedagogistas, teachers, administrators and parents

- visits to Infant Toddler Centers and Preschools of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia

- a folder for each participant with information and materials concerning the city of Reggio Emilia, its municipal infant toddler center and preschool experience and Reggio Children

- private bus transportation from and to the centers in Reggio Emilia when required by the program

- interpreters and professional leadership

- insurance as specified below

- coffee breaks and farewell reception

ACCOMMODATIONS

Blocks of rooms at hotels in or near the center of Reggio Emilia have been reserved at group rates for7 nights. Check-in is: Saturday, May 1st. Check-out is: Saturday, May 8th.

Hotel rates for accompanying non-participants and for additional nights are available upon request. Arrangements for accommodations at the Ghiara Youth Hostel, which offers a more economical option, are also available (up to four persons per room with shared bathroom facilities).

REGISTRATION & PAYMENT

A $500 deposit is required to reserve a space. Please make $500 check payable to: International Study Tours and send it along with the completed Registration Form to: Angela Ferrario dba International Study Tours, 15 Beach Street Extension, Milford, MA 01757. Email: . Registrations are accepted and processed in the order in which they are received. Confirmation and Invoice for Balance Due will be sentby email from Angela Ferrario, U.S. Liaison for Study Groups to Reggio Emilia. Balance may be paid by check or credit card due upon receipt of invoice but no later than March 19, 2010.

REFUNDS AND CANCELLATION: All monies are refundable in full minus a $50 processing fee, until March 19, 2010. After March 19, 2010, participants will be refunded 85% of the participation fee for cancellations communicated in writing to Angela Ferrario by April 9, 2010. No refund will be due for cancellations made after April 9, 2010 and for no-shows.

ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE

Please book your own flights. Air transportation is not included. Most participants will fly on Friday, April 30, arrive in Italy on Saturday, May 1 and return home on Saturday, May 8, 2010. (Please refer to Note under Airport Transfers section.) Bologna Marconi Airport and Milan Malpensa Airport are thenearest airports to Reggio Emilia. Participants are expected to be in Reggio Emilia for the welcome lunch and introductory meeting which will take place on Sunday, May 2nd.

AIRPORT TRANSFERS

Courtesy round trip bus transportationbetween Reggio Emilia and both airports will be arranged to accommodate the majority of the group. Informationexplaining how to reach Reggio Emilia on your own will be provided for participants whose flight itinerary does not correspond with the final bus schedule.

On Saturday, May 1, 2010 there will be one (possibly two) transfers from Bologna Airport and one (possibly two) transfers from Milan Malpensa Airport to Reggio Emilia. The first bus from each airport will leave at approximately 9:00 a.m. with second buses and departure times to be determined as needed.

On Saturday, May 8, 2010 there will be one (possibly two) transfers from Reggio Emilia to Bologna Airport and one (possibly two) transfers to Milan Malpensa Airport. The first bus to each airport will leave Reggio Emilia at approximately 5 a.m. with second buses and departure times to be determined as needed.

Please Note: In order to take advantage of the airport transfers from Reggio Emilia on Saturday, May 8th, please book your return flight no earlier than 10 a.m. out of Milan Malpensa Airport and no earlier than 8 a.m. out of Bologna Airport.

It is recommended to be at the airport at least 2 hours before your scheduled flight departure time. From Reggio Emilia it takes approximately 2 ½ hours to reach Milan Malpensa Airport and approximately 1 hour to reach Bologna Airport, depending on traffic conditions.

Whenbooking your return flight for May 8th, please calculate your timing carefully.The decision to use one of the transfers is yours and we cannot be held responsible for missed flights.

RESPONSIBILITY

Angela Ferrario dba International Study Tours: Professional Development Abroad acts only as the agent for the several hotels and other suppliers providing accommodations and services to participants. International Study Tours shall not be liable for any cancellation, injury, loss, damage, expense, delay or inconvenience which may be caused or sustained by any participant.

Reggio Children S.r.l is released from any charges and obligations related to possible cancellations or date changes when due to circumstances beyond Reggio Children’s control or for any other reason not directly imputable to the failure of Reggio Children S.r.l. In this unlikely case, Reggio Children S.r.l. undertakes to agree with Angela Ferrario new dates for the Initiative, or if an agreement is not reached, to release Angela Ferrario and, thereby, participants from all payment obligations. Reggio Children S.r.l. is not responsible for travel arrangements or other planning costs incurred. Reggio Children S.r.l. reserves the right to modify the program according to organizational needs or to Public Authorities’ provisions or measures. Participants are responsible for issuing an individual insurance policy for accidents of any type which may occur during the Study Group when not inside a municipal institution. Reggio Children S.r.l. will provide insurance for participants for damages caused to people or things inside the municipal institutions.

Travel Insurance is not included and should be secured by the individual participant.
