ESSENTIAL UNIT 3 E03

(Addition and Subtraction Strategies)

(July 2013)

Unit Statement: In this unit the student will explore and model addition and subtraction strategies, and apply what they have learned to real life situations. The student will apply the key terms and develop problem solving skills.

Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)

Problem Solving and higher order thinking components are essential for A level mastery. Each TSW can contain problem solving and higher order thinking components. (as found in suggested text)

1.  The Student Will apply the commutative property of addition for sums within 20. ( Go Math! 1 3.1 )*

2.  TSW experiment with a variety of strategies such as, count-on, doubles, doubles +1, doubles -1 to solve addition problems within 20. (3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6)

3.  TSW demonstrate” add 10”, and “make a ten” strategies to add within 20. (3.7, 3.8, 3.9)

4.  TSW apply the commutative or associative properties of addition. (3.10, 3.11,3.12)

5.  TSW explore a variety of strategies, count back, think addition, use 10, break apart, and act it out, to subtract.( 4.1,4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5)

6. TSW model add or subtract story problems 0-20. (3.12, 4.6)

*Suggested GO Math! Chapter sections to use with TSW’s.

Introduced and Practiced Outcomes: (taught not assessed)

1.  The Student Will engage in critical mathematical thinking and problem solving

2.  TSW explore addition and subtraction relationships.

3.  TSW extend fluency in adding to 20 and subtracting to 10.

4.  TSW engage in critical mathematical thinking and problem solving

5.  TSW engage in daily calendar activities.

6.  TSW discuss the unit concepts using the key terms.
