3.“CAN I CHOOSE COURSES OUTSIDE OFSSPS?”

Yes, but students wishing to register for options outside SSPS (40 credits for Single Honours students across both Honours years, i.e. 20 credits per year) must first discuss and agree that choice with their Personal Tutor. They then must obtain the permission of the convenor of the outside course and, if necessary the Head of Subject or his/her delegate. The SSO or PT will need to enter a concession onto Euclid noting approval for the outside course.

4. “HOW DOES P/IR ALLOCATE COURSES?”

We endeavour to meet all students’ preferred choices. However, if demand for places exceeds supply we apply the following general hierarchy:

  • Year 4 students (single and combined) take precedence over year 3 students;
  • Either Politics or IR students may be given precedence based on the content of course (e.g. IR students will be given precedence on Human Rights in IR; Politics students will take precedence for Comparing Scottish Devolution);
  • If spaces are still available after the requests of PIR students have been met, the course will be open to a) SSPS students and b) non-SPSS students in that order.

Provisional allocation of courses will be available in late summer via MyEd.

5.“HOW DOES THE HONOURS ENTRY APPEAL PROCESS WORK?

If you don't qualify for entry to Honours but consider that you have grounds for appeal, you should write formally to the Head of Subject.

Please see the following page for more information regarding the appeal’s procedure.

Those who have not met the entry to Honours criteria may still submit the course selection form, but any allocation of courses will be conditional upon the outcome of your appeal.

Appeals submissions are possible after the Exam board has met (usually mid-June) and the grades have been published. Please note that no appeals can be considered after that the 31st August 2013.

6.“HOW DOES THE COURSE SELECTION WORK FOR YEAR ABROAD STUDENTS?”

Students currently in the second year intending to do a year abroad in their third year will need to choose their year abroad courses in liaison with the P/IR Junior Year Abroad Co-ordinator (Dr. Ewan Stein, )

Both single and combined honours students will need to find substitutes for (most of) their compulsory third year courses in their year abroad, or take them on their return in fourth year. Note special requirements are in place for Modern European Language and Politics students; please see your specific degree requirements.
