  1. Call to Order –
    Welcome and Introduction of new COD staff members
Pam opened the meeting and introduced Dr. Annebelle Nery, Vice President of Student Success, Amanda Phillips, Interim Dean of Counseling, Dean Papas, Dean of Communications and Humanities, and Dr. Pamela Ralston, Vice President of Student Learning.

The new administrators gave a brief review of their background and experience.

3. Information/Discussion Item
3.1 COD Updates – COD Resource Fair – A. Nery
DISCUSSION / Today approx. two hundred high school seniors will visit COD. They will have an exciting day with faculty and student services staff including a financial aid workshop, apply for FAFSA, get assistance with on line application, meet counselors and make a short-term student education plan. At lunch there will be a resource fair. Over twenty areas of the college are working together and setting up tables- including instructional programs. We have a large number of resources: financial, child care, special programs, etc. Student will receive Priority 3 registration once they complete therequired activities.
Students can sign up for EDGE at the resource fair
  • EDGE has moved to 5 sites, with over 1000 spots
  • Thanks to your input we added evening EDGE at the Indio campus
  • DHS to Palm Springs to Palm Desert to Indio offer EDGE
  • Mecca/Thermal will offer EDGE this summer
This fall EDGE students will be provided resources for the entire year including book vouchers provided by the Foundation.
-The resource fair is each Friday during the high school visits
-Initial spots in Mecca/Thermal for EDGE is 30-60. Back up sessions will be available based on need.
-EDGE students get same priority as graduatinghigh school seniors
There was a question regarding the success rate of EDGE last year. Dr. Nery said she will bring data to present on EDGE completers.
There is a huge change and shift in the partnerships between high schools and COD in such a productive way (Michelle). It’s been very effective. 65 kids signed up and 30 were allowed to test for assessment at Rancho Mirage High School and sign up for EDGE program.
CONCLUSION / Do EDGE presentation in Sept or Oct. The results will only get better each year. Debrief and talk with participants find out how we can improve next year.

3.2 COD Updates
DISCUSSION / -Commencement May 27th, almost 1000 graduates, near our record of 1100 from 2015
-Transfer Ceremony May 19th 200 students are attending the event and transferring to a variety of UC’s, CSU’s, and private universities
-Celebrating student successes - 30% increase in students certified at CSU, approaching 800
-CSU and UC accept junior status for transfer. Ed Code changed to make it easier for students to transfer. Students who complete 60 unitsin a specialized AA degree for transfer go in with a priority.

4.1 K-12 District Updates

  • CVUSD - 3 teams go to New Orleans for the Kid Wind challenge;
CVD hospitality awards, 7 students each received a$1,000 scholarship
  • PSUSD – This summer, the district will pull academic and CTE teachers togetherin various pathways and integrated projects. Map curriculum for year, something that has either personal or community value, meaningful outside world applications.End of year student showcase, open forum for community to see work students are doing.
  • PSUSD - Middle school team going to HOSA
Just finished Student Film Festival; there were so many films that a separate Elementary Film Festival istaking place May 25 at 6:00 p.m. at RMHS and a High School Film Festival June 16 at 6:00 p.m. at the Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs
Cal State is beginning a pilot for senior math class
  • DHSHS – Going to New Orleans with a group of 20 students for Kid Wind competition
Starting a new academy called ACE academy: Academy of Careers and Education - develop a pipeline to staff our schools with homegrown teachers – will collaborate with COD and other educational partners
PSA academy is competing in state competition in San Diego –
Getting new equipment for second year in Skills USA
  • Desert Learning Academy – working virtually, student are looking forward to graduating;working with teachers on assessment opportunities for students that are working in a virtual environment
  • RMHS – Summer automotive program and welding program
Hospitality class for seniorsnext year, begin COD pathway in hospitality
Developing classes in sports medicine or first aid/CPR
Interested in developing a law class
Café Academy finished state competition,6 competed - two got 1st place awards now they are catering the sports events
  • PSHS – Valedictorianwas named one of the top 10 in the county out of 430,000 students
Virtual enterprise competed in international competition with 230 international schools – we took gold in catalog category; global business challenge our students placed 5th; elevator pitch finished in the top 1%. HOSA swept top 10 in state competition for sports medicine; took first place in CPR; 11 students going on to nationals. Manufacturing program applied for CTE challenge
Welding program, classes for COD on offered at night starting June 6th@ PSHS campus welding lab
  • RMHS – Preparing Senior for 1st graduating class (several at COD today)
Request COD HS Counselor Conference take place in February next year; Auto program Douglas Redman and Keith Prouty excellent working with them. Douglas going to dept. meeting on Tuesday to discuss curriculum alignment
-Café Academy culinary field trip at COD May 26th; Kitchen-Kitchen doing gadget demo on May 31st
-RACE Academy – Business partner from Riverside came gave demo on brake maintenance; BMW coming May 11 with guest speaker on customer service and demonstration
(Anne K. told Amanda she meets 3-4 times a year with a whole group of counselors, please come early in the year and present information about upcoming activities)
  • CVUSD - DMHS received approval from UCBerkeley for their Puente leadership program
  • Board approved,first in Riverside County, international transcript analysis policy. Refugee status students may not have records, we have a procedure to reconstruct a school record. Use for credit toward graduation – first of its kind in RC. County superintendent plans to roll it out for consideration county wide.
Second year in a row, all high schools have Gates Williams scholars, coming from their school
  • CCHS - Work based learning events – data production day – a production team came and talked about roles and jobs in commercial production;HEAL Academy had a job shadow day; Mentor program filled with 22 mentors from addictions counselors to physician assistants; Ballet Folklorico starting next year
Work Experience student: Father died, he was a mechanic, student’s dream was to be a mechanic, concurrently enrolled, now a college student!
