Indian Residential Schools Research Project

Now that you and your learner group have a solid understanding of the history and legacy of the Indian Residential School system in Canada we would like you to take on the responsibility of seeking to learn more about a specific IRS and the children that attend that particular school.

With a partner please choose a Residential School below, and using the internet research the school and answer the questions below. By yourself, or with a partner (please have partner approved by teacher) please create a poster that presents answers to the following questions.

1. Where was this Indian Residential School located? (Did it move to additional locations? If yes, what years did it operate in each location?)

2. What are the years that this IRS was operational?

3. What church or other organization operated this IRS? (Was it operated by more than one church or organization? If yes, what years was it operated by each church or group?)

4. Upon whose traditional territory was this Residential School built?

5. What were the conditions like at this IRS?

6. Find stories specific to this IRS. (these could come from survivor testimony, newspaper articles, reports, books, memoires, etc)

7. What kind of abuses did the children suffer at the school?

8. Why was the IRS created? What was its purpose? Was it successful?

Your poster must contain the answers to all of these questions and must include titles, graphics and pictures to help illustrate your description of the school.

You must include a list of sources (web addresses) used in the construction of your poster. Glue or staple to the back of the poster. Please look at the rubric for further explanation of expectations.
