The class will briefly discuss the names of the planets and the fact that PLUTO is no longer being a planet.

THEME
(science/folklore) Beforehand, the teacher will hide groundhog "shadows" on the playground. The students will sing the song GROUNDHOG DAY (doc camera). The class will then discuss the story of the groundhog and his shadow. The teacher willdiscuss how shadows are made and using the doc camera, will make shadows (with hands, solid objects, clear object). The students will then color and cut out a groundhog. The teacher will staple the completed groundhog to a stick. The students willthen crawl through a tunnel made from students' legs, w/groundhog. The teacher will shine a flashlight (or not) on the child as he/she exits the tunnel. Did the groundhog see his shadow? If time permits (in groups of 4) the studentswill go outside and find the cut-out shadow that matches the groundhog the teacher is holding.
