School Council Meeting Minutes
Monday May 29, 2017, 7pm

Attendees: Principal Norm Black, Kal Salem, Deepa Thakur, Carmen Preotesoiu, Sarah Salem, ShivanaBottjer, Saman Kahn, Laura Bederian-Russell
- Welcome and opening remarks by Principal Black.
- Minutes from May 1st council meeting -- approved by Kal and Laura.
- Agenda -- approved by Kal and Shivana.
- School Council Chair Report:
- Reflecting on the current 2016/2017school year:
-Ithas been a successful andproductive foundational year.
-School Councilcomprised of primarily Grade 7 & few Grade 6 parents --councilmembers will be welcomed back.
-2016/2017 School Council Report will be submitted by Kal and Mr. Blackby the end of June.
- Looking forward to 2017/2018:
-School resumes Tuesday September 5th.
-Band "Live Differently" has been bookedto perform and welcome students from 8:30-9:30 on September 5th. They will deliverthemedinspirational messagesthat will welcome students as they congregate in the gym. This willallow adequate time forall bussesto arrive prior to the announcement and commencement of homeroom.
- 2017/2018Pro-Grant -- Parent Reaching Out Grant(funds to be usedfor Parent education session) along and theParent Engagement Grant (to be used to get parents involved) -- maximum fundingamount has been requested. Paperwork has beensubmitted. We will know fundinginMid-September. Grant funds will be used for Screenagers program, an online parent organization based in California providing access to educational video resources.
- Administrator's Report:
- Parent Orientation Open House took place over the course of3 eveningsbetweenMay 23-25th; 1 evening for community schoolsand 2 nights for those interested in ExtendedFrench. All 3 evenings were well attended.
- 2017/2018 Staffing Update -- Mr. Black is in the process of hiring an additional member. This process will hopefully be complete by the end of June.
- Grade 8 Yearbook -- there are many wonderful pictures to fill the yearbook.This year students were asked to share their favourite quote! There are many inspiring messages for the students and their parents to enjoy.
- Director's Cut Workshop -- this movie making program was enjoyed by all students.
- Sporting Events Update -- many sporting opportunities hasbeen well received and enjoyed. Currently wrapping up intramurals.
- Talent show was a great success!
- Graduation Update --June 22nd, at 5:30pm.
- Volunteers are askedto arrive at 3pm.
- A note will go home to firm attendance numbers along with asking for volunteers to support clean up/collection of school purchased decorations, following the celebration.
- Invitations will be printed soon!
- Cake budget to be provided by Principal Black. Various locations were discussed including Costco, Sobeys, Longos, Highland Farms, Cupid’s Cupcakes.
- Outdoor Education Centre -- "School without Walls" program--outdoor educators to lend their resourcesto GGstudents when availability arises. We will have aprox 3 weeks notice of such availability. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students, and also to other schools that will make use of the outdoor learningopportunity at GG.
- EQAO begins for our Grade 6 students on Tuesday May 30 until June 1st. Results will be out mid September. Individual results will be mailed in the fall.
- Monday June 12th is a PD day for Report Cards.
- Friday June 30th is a PD day, for staff to wrap up the school year.
- September 2017
- First School Council meeting will take place on Monday October 2nd, 2017.
- Nominationletter will be out ahead of this meeting.
- Discussion to encourage more synervoice communication.
- Encourage use of classroom webpages for teachers to communicate with parents
- Pre-book all 2017/2018 Council meetings.
- Over the summer:
- Awater refill station will be installed, to eliminate plastic bottles.
- Bathroomrenovation --new bathroom stalls for both boys and girls.
