Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth.
Bless the Lord, my soul!
Lord God, how great you are.
How many are your works, O Lord!
The earth is full of your riches.
You take back your spirit, they die,
returning to the dust from which they came.
You send forth your spirit, they are created;
and you renew the face of the earth.

May the glory of the Lord last for ever!
May the Lord rejoice in his works!
May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
I find my joy in the Lord.
I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness

ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
The Fatima SVDP is desperately in need of regular monthly income for their ongoing projects – Ottawa, Wylie House, Missionaries of Charity and St Theresa’s Children’s Home – their currently monthly commitments being approx R20 000 per month. The monthly parish collection, income from sales of second hand goods at Golden Hours and a few debit orders leaves them with a shortfall every month when a donation of R100 per month from 50% of our parishioners would bring in the necessary monthly funds to meet their obligations!
We encourage you to make the St Vincent de Paul Society your charity of choice by contributing to the collection for the poor on the First Sunday of every month or by depositing your contribution into their bank account:
Bank First National Bank

An 18A Tax Certificate for all annual/monthly donations or debit orders: exceeding R500 can be supplied on request. Any queries please email :

Prayer for our Families
God of tender love and mercy,
thank you for the gift and blessing of Christian family life and all families.
We entrust our families to your constant care and protection.
Grant us wisdom to see how we can change our home life,
to become more like that of the Holy Family of Nazareth.
Teach us to listen to each other more attentively
and to be sensitive to each other’s needs.
Show us how to care for each other
and to share our time and all we have, generously.
Give us a spirit of patience and understanding.
Draw us together in deep bonds of
friendship, love and care for one another.
Comfort and strengthen us when we are wearied by trials and sorrows.
May the inspiration of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, be in our homes,
bringing light, warmth, unity, forgiveness and peace.
May we radiate the joy of Christian family life to all who come to our homes.
Bless our hearts and our homes now and always,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Pentecost Sunday Year A
08 June 2014
Commentary Lionel Swain
First Reading (Acts 21: 1-11)
The setting of this episode is the Jewish festival of Pentecost which celebrates the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai at the time of the Exodus and Yahweh’s covenant with his people Israel. The mention that ‘all were together in the same place’ (v.1) evokes the scene depicted in 1:14. The sound of the violent wind filling the house and the appearance of the tongues of fire settling individually on each of those gathered together are symbols of the Holy Spirit filling the assembly and empowering each member to speak. The other actors in the drama are not only the inhabitants of Jerusalem but also Jews from the Diaspora visiting Jerusalem for the festival. Their coming together and confusion ironically recall the scene of Gen 11:1-9, depicting the dispersal of the nations. The scene includes their hearing, indeed, their recognition that the comprehensible content of the assembly’s speaking – its “Magnificat’ (Lk 1:46-55) – is the ‘great deeds of God’.
Second Reading (1 Cor 12:3-7, 12-13)
Paul is here responding to the Corinthian faithful community question regarding ‘spiritual gifts” (vv.1,4). The most basic gift of the Holy Spirit, common to all, is faith, expressed in the confession ‘Jesus is Lord’ (v.3). The same Spirit also manifests itself in a variety of gifts, all of which are for the benefit of the whole community. To illustrate the unity and diversity of this community, Paul compares the human body with Christ, of whom, by implication, all those belonging to the community – of whatever national, cultural origin or social status – are members. By asserting that we are all baptised into this one body and drink from the one Spirit, Paul situates the readers’ most radical gift in their once-and-for-all baptism: they were not only incorporated passively into Christ but also made to drink actively of his unique life-giving Spirit, symbolised by water.
Gospel (Jn 20:19-23)
While the evening and the shut doors symbolise the disciples’ fear in Jesus’ absence, his coming to them, standing in their midst and greeting them express his loving initiative towards them. His showing his hands and his side, bearing the marks of his death, which, paradoxically, is the means of the peace which he brings, opens their eyes to see him as Lord and to rejoice. Jesus’ repetition of his greeting implies that the disciples are not, however, to be content with this joy. Rather, they are to participate in the same mission which he had from his Father. His breathing on them, while speaking, evokes Gen 2:7 and Ezek 37:9-10, suggesting that the disciples are being recreated as a new humankind and regenerated as the people of Yahweh with a new, eternal covenant. The words ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’ express both a fact and a command: by breathing on them, Jesus is giving them the Holy Spirit, but they must accept this gift actively. The reference to the forgiveness of sins evokes Jer 31:31-33, and suggests that the disciples are to be the community in which the new covenant, climaxing in the forgiveness of sins, is to be realised and actualised.

Sunday Mass and Holy Day Obligation
It is both a precept of the Church and Church law that Catholics must worship God on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation by participating in the Holy Mass. This follows from the fact that in the Mass it is Christ Himself who worships the Father, joining our worship to His. In no other way is it possible to adequately give thanks (eucharistia) to God for the blessings of creation, redemption and our sanctification than by uniting our offerings to that of Jesus Christ Himself.
Following the example of the Old Covenant the Church does this weekly, on Sundays, the day of the Lord’s Resurrection.
Canon 1247
On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass; they are also to abstain from those labors and business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is proper to the Lord's Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and body.
Canon 1248
1. The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day.
The proper way to celebrate Sunday is spoken of at length in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
