Bachelor in Applied Management (BAS). The second four year degree program at Clark, (the first was in Dental Hygiene), is in second phase of approvals. Slated to open for students fall of 2016.
Advisory Committee Composition is a great place for us to engage folks from the community. While our current student body is 58% from non-dominate populations, our advisory committees are generally not as diverse. Diversity will help Clark ensure training needs of all students are met.
Budget Reduction Proposal- Brenda Walstead, Interim Dean of Business and Health Sciences. Brenda explained the reduction proposal which includes reducing the nursing cohorts from 48 students to 32. Said faculty to please give feedback via surveys on campus. Included in the proposal is to cut the NAC program completely. Clinical sites have been hard to find and hold onto. Brenda also asked committee members to forward their thoughts to Cindy so she could upload to the survey. Discussion about the proposed cuts including a comment from Cheryl Snodgrass in which she reiterated that Clark nursing graduates are loved; they are by far the best educated and trained in the region. Cindy said she will send a follow-up email requesting input from members to forward to the college.
Director/Division Chair Report
SNACC (Student Nurse) Program Update. Jonica Beird, a 5th quarter student in the program and one of the co-presidents of the Student Nurses Association. It’s a student-run program with weekly meetings during lunch at WSU. They volunteer & network within the community. After reading the mission statement she broke down each phrase and backed it up with what the program is doing to fulfill their mission. She said their aim is not only making a difference in a student’s life, but also in making a positive difference in the community. They are working hard to promote the nursing program and identify needs of the community to foster partnerships in the community. A lot of volunteer work is done by these students including:
· Volunteering at Share House which included a dental education day for kids and the Giving Tree program.
· They offer incoming students tours of the nursing facility. Students can ask question about the program and facility and they work to ease the stress and fear of being new to the program.
· New this year was the Walk for Cancer. In lieu of money, they asked for gift cards for gas and groceries to be donated to oncology patients who are in need.
Cindy thanked Jonica and told the members that this group is a strong, positive and supportive program for the nursing students.
Staffing Updates: Cindy reported that she’s been looking at hiring a clinical placement manager to look for resources for students in the program. The money for this person’s salary comes from the Speight’s grant. This position will begin with Nursing and then expand to other health occupation programs at Clark. There is an offer out to an applicant so hopefully the position will be filled very soon. Cindy announced that Terri Nosack has resigned and they’re looking to replace her position.
Speight’s Draft. The Speight’s Committee met recently to look at the incoming amount of money to be distributed this year. In 2007, Hilma Speights donated $4M to the nursing program. Every year the program receives an allocation of money from those funds to spend on a variety of things that support the program. Like the Foundation, the program receives the interest made on that money. This year it was over $100K. Faculty discuss expenses and future needs to decide where the funds are needed. Some faculty were able to attend conferences, such as Nurse Educator boot camp. Cindy described where funding has gone to support the program, faculty, supplies, etc. An additional $12K for faculty tools is allocated. The committee voted to support using the Speights funds for the clinical placement manager. The vote was unanimously approved.

Direct Transfer Agreement/Major Ready Program - Angie Marks. Still working to on approval for the DTA/MRP degree pathway. This degree will help with uniformity across the state for nursing degrees. The nursing department is slated to begin spring 2017. With this new agreement, students will be able to earn a bachelor of science in nursing in 4 years, which means one year of prerequisites, 2 years of nursing curriculum and then transfer to any university, public or private, who have signed on to participate. WSU in Vancouver has committed to accept all qualified graduates to their program. After some discussion, the committee voted unanimously in support of the Direct Transfer Agreement.
Student Max updates. Angie said they are working on software updates. Orientation modules includes fire and safety, HIPAA, etc. The requirement began in fall. Students have finished the modules quickly. Next academic year will be tracking all clinical requirements in the new software. There’s been a large learning curve and transition process.
