EDS 715: Research in Special Education.

3 hours, 3 credits. This course is an introduction to research and will enable students to read, critique, and review professional research. Students will learn about research design, descriptive statistics, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and the use of technology in research. As a final project, the formulation of a research topic and completion of a comprehensive review of literature linked to a teaching project for EDS 718 will be required. PREREQ: EDS 706, 711, 717; COREQ: EDS 718.

Purpose of the course:

1.  To provide students with the necessary skills to locate, read and analyze published

research on a topic of choice.

3. To guide students in formulating research questions related to a topic in the field of Special Education.

4. To guide students in an exploration of the research material on the topic of choice

with the goal of answering their research questions.

5. To write a graduate level paper that synthesizes the research, provides a design for

research, including research methodology, and suggests future research that would add

to the body of information on this topic.

6. To guide students in the submission of their proposal for IRB approval.

COURSE CALENDAR

Please note: This is not an independent study course. Your final paper will be the result of independent work with guidance and instruction from the professor.

In addition to class time, students will schedule appointments with the professor on a regular basis.

Each student is expected to meet with the Professor at least every other week. Your scheduling of regular appointments will be part of your final grade. Failure to meet with me during these times will result in my advising you to withdraw from the course. This is not negotiable.

In addition, attendance at all class meetings is required.

Writing tutors are available at the Writing Center. If you need assistance with writing, you are strongly advised to sign up at the Center ASAP.

An important skill required for writing the research paper/literature review is that you be able to paraphrase and summarize information from a variety of sources. Please familiarize yourself with the definition of plagiarism, and CUNY policy regarding plagiarism.

Assignment #1

Decide on your topic and narrow it to a researchable area.

This should be written as a thesis statement. Find a book and five journal articles related to your topic. This will begin to make you more fluent about your topic, as well as also provide you with other sources to research.
