Talk and Listen Phone Support Worker (Volunteer)
Title: Phone Support Worker
Reports to: Rushel Briscoe
Hours: Two shifts available (Monday – Friday)
AM Shift 9:30am – 12:30pm
PM Shift 12:30pm – 4:30pm
Volunteering Objective:
Elizabeth Fry Toronto is currently recruiting volunteers and peer workers for Talk and Listen. Talk and Listen is a peer and community run initiative provided by women for women in conflict with the law. Volunteers are trained to act as a listening ear, while supporting women who are incarcerated access services and resources in the community.
Volunteer Profile:
- Age requirement: Minimum 18 years old.
- Lived experience considered an asset, but not required.
- No previous experience required – training and on-going support is provided.
- Confidence in the use of computer applications.
- Demonstrated active listen skills.
- Strong ability to build rapport and convey empathy.
- Capacity to remain calm when dealing with high stress or challenging situations.
- Bilingualism considered an asset.
Expectation/Criteria:
- Able to commit at least 8-12 hours a month. Attend all shifts as scheduled, and inform Program Coordinator of any absence as soon as possible.
- Be available for 4 -5 hours shifts between the hours of 9:30AM - 4:30PM.
- A minimum of a 6 month commitment required.
- Access to reliable transportation (vehicle or transit).
- Must adhere with program procedures, including dress codes.
- Be able to attend mandatory training at Elizabeth Fry Toronto.
- Must be able to work independently with little or no supervision.
Additional Skills/Interests An Ideal Candidate Would Poses:
- Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System and issues impacting individuals primarily women in conflict with the law an asset.
- Excellent Customer Service Skills.
- Excellent oral, written, and verbal communication skill.
