SUBJECT: 2013-14 Learning Labs

The Learning Lab is an alternative professional development format that provides a job-embedded learning experience in which participants have an opportunity to learn in collaboration with peers. The LPS Learning Labs will utilize two formats:

Observation – This format involves a classroom observation. The session begins with a pre-observation discussion to establish norms, gain background information, and set goals. The participants then have an opportunity to visit a classroom to observe a colleague facilitating a learning experience with students engaged in learning. The session ends with debriefing and reflection.

Lesson Study – This format involves a focused study of an instructional model. The session begins with new learning. This might involve reading an article, viewing a video, or a demonstration. The participants then have an opportunity to engage in the new learning by working in collaboration with a colleague to plan and deliver a lesson to a small group of students. The session ends with debriefing and reflection.

The 2013-14 Learning Labs will focus on guided reading. The purpose of these sessions will be to:

·  Familiarize participants with Jan Richardson’s guided reading lesson plan format

·  Use data to drive instructional planning

·  Refine guided reading instructional delivery

·  Reflect on guided reading practice

The attached chart details the names of participants as well as the dates, times, and locations for each Learning Lab team. Please touch base with your school secretary about substitute arrangements. Timebank will be funded by your school.

Our first Learning Lab session will be an observations experience. Please bring your copy of The Next Step in Guided Reading to each Learning Lab session.

I look forward to learning together!
