INTRODUCTION
Technikon Pretoria’s’ Institute for Quality Management and Statistics (TIQMS) was established in 1987 by Mr. David Stables, who is still the current Director of the Institute. He has also been the National Convenor for the B Tech: Quality, and its forerunner the NH Diplomas: QA and TQM since 1984. Since 1991 he has been serving on the National Technical Committee – NTC 176 that approves/ adopts the use of the ISO 9000 Standards in SA. He has represented SA several times at the ISO/TC 176 meetings on ISO 9000. TIQMS was one of the first two SAATCA accredited course providers for training Quality Auditors.
TIQMS also represents the German Automotive Association (VDA) in SA and is responsible for the training and certification of VDA 6.1 Certified Auditors as well as Certifying Auditors to the new ISO/ TS 16949 Automotive Standard that is replacing QS 9000 and VDA 6.1.

BASIC SPC COURSE
DURATION2.5 Days
COSTR 2 150-00 (R4 000-00 if booked on both basic and advanced)
DATES16 – 18 July;22 - 24 October
This course investigates the different sources of manufacturing problems and provides insight in how SPC can be used in an overall strategy for improvement. It also shows the need for SPC to be integrated with other techniques to be effective. It then demonstrates the process of setting up an SPC system using X-bar and R-charts as the primary control chart. To eliminate blame and stagnation emphasis is placed on the different roles of management and operation.
Delegates will learn how to conduct an initial capability study, how to estimate the best potential a process has and what action to take if the process is not good enough. They will learn how to design and set up control charts for the future monitoring and control of the process and what action to take when a process goes out of control. Throughout the two courses, various case studies are completed.

ADVANCED SPC COURSE
DURATION2.5 Days
COSTR 2 150-00 (R4 000-00 if booked on both basic and advanced)
DATES18 - 20 July; 24 – 26 October
The main intention of this course is to provide a step-by-step approach for setting up an effective SPC system and how to handle inadequate processes, specification and materials. It initially takes the subject of SPC further with
1) an introduction of other control charts that can be used in various industrial situations ( X-bar and s charts, charts for individual values and Pre-control charts);
2) a generic classification of the different types of industrial processes
3) guidelines for selection and use of the different control charts at the different types of industrial processes
4) the application of SPC to measurement systems
The course finally brings all these issues together in a step by step approach for setting up a SPC system that allows management to form policy statements regarding manufacturing practises and to deploy them through the SPC system.
CERTIFICATES
Delegates who have passed the evaluation will receive a Technikon Pretoria certificate. Other delegates will receive a TIQMS attendance certificate.

DOCUMENTATION SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
DURATION1 Day
COSTR 850-00
DATES24 August
ALSO AVAILABLE AS IN-HOUSE
An efficient documentation system is a prerequisite for successful management and for compliance with industry management standards such as ISO 9000, ISO 14000.
Most organisations have the necessary facilities to create and control:
-technical documents such as engineering drawings, parts lists, catalogues etc;
-management/procedural documents such as policies, procedures, work instructions and records.
However, being caught up in outdated documentation philosophies and methods, many organisations are faced with systems which have become ineffective and unmanageable.
The operating systems and file management platforms used in PC and LAN / WAN environments today offer excellent opportunities to develop and set up custom, paperless documentation systems which run directly on the operating systems of the organisations' computer networks. This means that no additional (and costly) software is necessary and that everyone with a PC has immediate access to his/her documents.
During this course a documentation system philosophy will be discussed which is based on the concepts of process and document ownership, and the correct balance between centralised and decentralised document control.
Other topics that will be thoroughly discussed are:
-the requirements of ISO 9000 and ISO 14000;
-folder (directory) and file structuring;
-folder/file security;
-document types;
-document content and layout;
-document control (including authorisation and validity control);
-document archiving;
-using the organisation's intranet (internal internet);
-maintenance of the documentation system.
Who should attend:
Senior management, to obtain first-hand insight of the philosophies and methods suggested during the workshop. Delegates in this group may excuse themselves as soon as they are satisfied that their companies will benefit.
Delegates from senior management should preferably be accompanied by their respective representatives responsible for the development and management of their organisations' documentation systems. Representatives may wish to stay until the end of the day, as technical detail will receive more attention towards the end of the course.
