Going Dutch: Art, Science and Discovery in Amsterdam and Beyond

PACKING CHECKLIST FOR TRIP TO THE NETHERLANDS (5/12-5/20)

You are NOT allowed to check luggage for this trip! That means everything you bring must fit into one carry-on suitcase (approximately 22” x 14” x 9”) and one personal item (like a backpack). It also means your toiletries will have to be in less than 100ml bottles/containers. This is for two reasons: 1) to avoid the chance of you losing your luggage and 2) because you will have to carry your own luggage from the airport, onto the train, tram, and to the hotel and back.

DO NOT FORGET:

___ passport!

___ two photocopies of your passport photo page(one for you and one for me)

___ the name and number of an emergency contact for you while you are abroad (you can email this to me or bring it to me on a sheet of paper)

___ bank or credit card that you can use to withdraw cash for meals and other purchases

BEFORE YOUR LEAVE: call your bank or go to the website to set up a “travel alert” by telling them the dates that you will be abroad in the Netherlands. This will avoid your bank issuing a fraud alert and temporarily shutting down your card!!!

OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS:

___ a small/medium-sized bag (NOT a backpack) that you will carry with you throughout the day while we are going to museums and sites. It is important that the bag is not too big or you will be required to check it at the museums, which will cost us precious time on the trip. A cross-body bag is the best and most secure option especially as we will be taking public transport frequently, which can be crowded.

___ good walking shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. It is almost certain to rain at least one day on this trip and likely more often, so you want to have shoes that are comfortable and can withstand puddles!

___ a raincoat or poncho, ideally a fold-up poncho that you can keep in your bag if we get caught in the rain (such as Raines by Totes Adult Poncho, approximately $10 on Amazon). A small umbrella is an option too (as long as it collapse to fit in your bag).

___ laptop or some portable electronic device that you can use to post on the trip blog

___camera or phone with camera so that you can take pictures for the trip blog

___warm clothes! Summer in Amsterdam is not always warm. You will likely not get much use out of sandals and will be more comfortable in a long sleeves and pants, especially as the museums are often cold as well.
