Mrs. Thomas’s Physical Education and Health Class

Welcome back to a brand new school year! McKinley School believes that healthy bodies build healthy minds. Our Physical Education program offers a variety of activities that promote physical, social, and emotional development. To ensure a successful and positive school year, I feel it is important for the parents, as well as the students, to know the rules and expectations for Physical Education and Health Class. Please read over the rules and expectations with your child, fill out the appropriate section, and have your child return it to school on Monday.

Important!! Each student will be assigned a PE lock and locker to lock their items in for the school year. There is a $5 lock rental fee for every student. No students should leave any items in the locker room unsecured. The school is not responsible for items taken, damaged, or lost that were not properly secured in a locker with their combination lock.

Locker Items: A few things you may want to make sure your child has in their PE locker are gym shoes, an extra pair of socks, deodorant, lotion, hair tie, sanitary napkins (maxi-pads or tampons), and even an extra pair of underwear.

Written Examinations/Quizzes/Homework: All students will be given at least one skill, or written test, one quiz, and one homework assignment per quarter based on the activities designed by the curriculum. Study guides are sent home 1 week in advance to allow parents to see the subject matter being taught and help their child form good study habits. Study guides will also be displayed on the fusion page for students and parents to look over. Students that do poorly on a written exam, or quiz, are allowed to make corrections, with a parent signature, and return the corrected paper for a better grade by the next gym period. Papers without a parent signature will not be corrected.

Dress Code/Physical Education Attire: Students are expected to come to class in the appropriate uniform and prepared every day. (Mondays are designated for Health, so uniforms will not be necessary) Students should bring their uniform home every Friday to be washed and return with it by Tuesday to wear for the week. The cost of the uniform is $20 and will be purchased in Physical Education class. (cash only) Students need to put their names on their uniforms in the appropriate space and no other writings or alterations should be done to the uniform. Doing so may require the student to purchase a new uniform. Uniforms need to be placed in a locked locker at the end of every period and should not be left on the benches or book shelves. Any uniform found on the floor will result in a 1 point deduction for the student for uniform.

Behavior: Students are to demonstrate good sportsmanship and respect for the teacher and their classmates at all times. Compliance with all the classroom and safety rules is required.

Classroom Procedures:

  1. Students will enter the gym before the tardy bell and sit in the bleachers for attendance and announcements before entering the locker room. Each time a student is not in the gym before the bell, the student will receive a tardy. On the 4th tardy to class, students will get a phone call home making the parents aware of their child’s tardiness, and on the 5th tardy, they will receive a detention (see student handbook for tardy policy).
  2. Students are allowed 4-5 minutes to get dressed in their uniform at the beginning and end of class. They will be given a 10 sec countdown to exit the locker room and all students must be out at that time. Any student remaining in the locker room after the countdown will lose a point from the daily S.T.A.R.S. participation points. (S= Sportsmanship, T= Time Management, A= Attitude, R= Respect, S= Safety) At the end of class, students will remain in the locker room until the dismissal bell rings and should exit the gym and proceed directly to their next class.
  3. Students will begin their warm-up once the locker room has been cleared. The Warm-up consists of mild aerobic activity and stretching exercises. Once the warm-up is completed, the students will be expected to participate in a variety of sports games, challenges, and activities.
  4. A written note from a parent can excuse a child from Physical Education for up to 2 days. After 2 days, a written note from the doctor will be required to be excused from physical education with no penalty for participation.

Consequences:

  1. First infraction: Warning and possible loss of S.T.A.R.S. points
  1. Second Infraction: Time out; student will sit in the bleachers (loss of participation points) and may be asked to complete a small writing assignment before being allowed to reenter the activity.
  1. Third Infraction: Student will be asked to get dressed, lose all points for the day, and will receive a phone call home.
  1. Phone call home and Office referral, Detention (zero for the day)
  1. Parent Conference with possible administrative intervention and consequences (zero for the day)
