Hello Science Olympiad Coaches;

Congratulations on making it to the Colorado State Science Olympiad competition on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. We hope everything is going well for you and your teams. You can find a current schedule (attached) with the rooms for each event, a recent map of the Colorado School of Mines (Attached; there are many changes), final registration form (attached), event entry forms, and the team list with your numbers (attached)on the web site at Make sure you check the schedule again the day of the competition. Please go to the Volk Gym Lobby on the East side for registration (starts around 7:30 a.m.) with your final registration form. If you are on a bus, you can drop off your team at your home base and then park the buses at 19th and Elm (to the South) in Lot FF. Mines has converted the old Ford dealership into a parking lot. Parents can park anywhere on campus; parking is free on Saturdays.

Have your students take the equipment that needs to be impounded to the room for the event. The closing ceremonies will be in the Gym around 4:30 p.m. It would be nice if you could make extra copies of the map and schedule for your students. I make the copies using my school budget and only make a few for the day of the competition. I would wait until a couple of days before, however, to make your copies. Things happen that I have no control of and last minute changes can be made to the schedule.

The Student Center cafeteria (Slate Café - upstairs) will be open for food from 11:00 a.m. to 7: 00 p.m. The food court in the Student Center (downstairs) will be open from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The food court has many different restaurants. The Geology Museum is open 9-4 and the Bookstore is open 10 – 2.

You can use all the Ballrooms in the Student Center on the second floor including Ballroom A, B, C, D, and E for Home Bases. We do bring in some chairs but if you could share with the other schools we would appreciate it. In addition, the classrooms on the third floor of Meyer (353,357,363,375), and some rooms on the first floor of Alderson (140,141,134,152) can be used for Home Bases. These rooms might have the doors locked but open; please keep the door open, otherwise it will be locked when you return. Also last year, one school tried to rope off their Home Base the night before in the Student Center. Please don’t do that; Mines has many events that are going on and the ropes had to be torn down. In addition, when you do find your home base, send someone back to registration and tell us where you are. We get phone calls from parents and it would be good if we could find you in case of an emergency. Colorado School of Mines is not charging us anything to use their campus. Please remove all trash and leave the rooms exactly the way you found it. We would like to be invited back.

  • Also please note all sign in events (self schedule) need to be signed in by noon. In addition, we have the following rules clarifications (also on the web site):
  • Compute This (B)
  • State: This event will use MS Word and Excel 2010.
  • Battery Buggy (B)
  • State: The track will be 2m wide.
  • Optics (B and C)
  • State: Teams will ONLY be allowed to use the tools specified in the rules for the performance portion of this event (tape measure, ruler, protractor, and calculator). Despite some seemingly contradictory discussions regarding templates on the national rules clarification site, templates will not be allowed at the Colorado state tournament.

Please keep an eye on email or check the web site for any changes. If we can assist you as you prepare your team, please contact one of us.If you know of a volunteer who would like to help, please contact David Kaliqi or Steve Lovaas.

Make sure all your materials are retrieved from the event room and your home bases are cleaned before going to the awards ceremony. The custodial staff at Mines has to start cleaning up while we are in the awards ceremony.
